for a variety of reasons we are considering selling our house clearing all debts and applying for a council bungalow [disabled dependant] .
has anyone done anything similar ?

Will you be paying the rent or will it be through housing benefit.

Jeez, let's all run up debts buying whatever we fancy, when said debts threaten to cripple us, flog the house and let the council find us somewhere nice to live (maybe even with solar panels!). If you want to respond and explain what special needs and financial assistance your daughter requires CHRISSY, I might soften my arsey approach, but at the moment it seems like you just want to pass the burden of your profligate ways onto the taxpayer.

Here's another thought - if you genuinely do want to sell your house to release capital and clear your debts, why not rent privately?

    Sounds good ChrissyG.
Fingers crossed that one comes up.

What's the deal with timings? I.e. do you have to sell your house at the same point that you get the new place (otherwise you'll be paying mortgage interest and rent)?

it is entirely possible that for a while we may have to pay rent and a mortgage we are in the process of preparing for that should it happen

feel free to be as arsey as you want ! ive no intention of relaying all my personal info .
when i spoke to the council i was asked what i intended to do with the house and i told her it was to be sold to [hopefully] clear debts she said that was fine.

In that case it seems fine but I'd certainly expect you to be at the bottom of the list so it could be years. I can only suggest renting privately.

Welcome to the wonderful world of bidding! I know you may get a few bonus point due to your family's disability issues, but there was a programme on TV a few months ago about the local authority bidding process, and some people had been in the "system" for years!

I believe anyone can register to bid, but you have to have a 100% solid gold NEED for housing by the council/LA to get a property, and being a home owner, please don't get your hopes up that it will happen any time soon. Even with those that are supposed to be coming available near you, there are probably dozens, if not 100s of others all competing for the same, and some who are in far greater need - due to being homeless, have far more "bidding" power than a homeowner who just wants to move to a cheaper rental property. The bidding system is basically just a fob off by the council - you bid, you get rejected, you bid on another and so on .......

I wish you luck and would be interested if you would keep us posted on how you get on.

a co worker has done the exact same thing she is married /both working/ no kids .she has been trying to sell her house but has decided to let it be repossessed [sp] .it took her 2 months from first going onto the list to moving ! im certainly not expecting it to be that quick but once we have been assessed i will be bidding on suitable properties.

    Why not rent privately then?

Thing is, I can't help but think that social housing should be kept for those that are really in need, and not those who voluntarily sell their own houses to clear debt. I fully appreciate that I'm not cognisant of why you've run this debt up, for all I know it's because caring for your daughter is incredibly expensive and you get little support. I also understand why you don't want to share your personal details, but sometimes they're relevant and you must understand yourself that if you don't give the full story people might well assume the worst of you.

I would imagine there aren't the same sorts of bungalows in the private sector.
