Op, you should have a meeting with the council housing officer before selling and throwing yourself at their mercy. You have little to no chance of acheiving this, regardless of how your friend did it. You will be very low priority, so make sure the council allow you to even go on the list before you make a huge mistake.0

My Mum and Dad did this, it was through medical needs, my Mum became more disabled (Chronic heart failure, severe Arthritis and Diabetes) the older she got and the Doctors, both her local GP and Consultants, told her she would have to move to accomodation without stairs and with a wet room to be able to keep her independence for as long as possible.
My parents didn't have any debt and the house was paid for but she still went to the top of the list for a bungalow, none of them wanted to move by the way, they had no choice. They waited for a bungalow, accepted it, we decorated it, they moved in and then the house went on the market. They didn't have to sell there house first then go on a list. I think adapted and retirement properties have different criteria than normal social housing, but correct me if I'm wrong.

thanks for your input ! you dont know my finacial situation apart from anything else , im assuming you cant offer any input re the actual question .
Your thread title is "Good idea or not?"
The very way you phrased the title acknowledged that there would be two completely different ways of looking at your situation. I obviously fell on the side of thinking your idea stinks.
You are right, I dont know your financial situation. Did you hold something back? Is it something that would materially change the reponse of any sane taxpayer who is fed up of the entitlement generation?0 -

It is sometimes cheaper for the council to offer you the house as your Dad will become the carer then to have your Mum put in to a home where the fee's could be far higher.0 -

You are right in a sense, they got the bungalow on my Mothers health issues but my Mother never had a carer, ok my dad used to do the shopping because it was easier to go on his own that take my Mum in the wheelchair but even after my Dad died, my Mother still didn't have a carer. She had myself and my brother and sisters and excellent treatment from our GP's. So she was never a burden on the benefits system.

Sounds good ChrissyG.
Fingers crossed that one comes up.
What's the deal with timings? I.e. do you have to sell your house at the same point that you get the new place (otherwise you'll be paying mortgage interest and rent)?0
