Hi all
my younger brother has been in Afghanistan for a couple of months and has a way to go before he is home. My dad has asked me to send him a 'package' so he knows we are thinking of him. My dad included biscuits and magazines in his. I could send more of the same but hoping someone could help me think of something more original - what will he be missing, what could be a nice surprise for him.
Thanks in advance everyone

When my hubby went out there, he often asked me to send him wet wipes/baby wipes to get rid of the dust and sand that gets everywhere. (well wrapped, as they do leak) I got him one of those little hand held fans (Milletts/Oswald Baileys do them I think) which he loved. Boiled sweets ( I did send Rolos once, never again ~ a melted choccie parcel was a big disappointment!!) are good, as are little puzzles and funny things that you can get in places like Hawkin's Bazaar. Does he read? Get him a couple of books maybe?Frodo ~ "..... I wish none of this had happened. "Gandalf ~ " So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. The best thing I got was a box of random things that her indoors just threw in a box, like a kids comic, photos, sweets, hairbrush (even though I have no hair). Any package that is received from home is a moral lifter straight away and he will be extremely grateful for it. Even though she threw random stuff in it really made me chuckle.IVA Completed - 2010"Wine for my men, we ride at dawn"960

My mother-in-law put my hubby a jar of chocolate baby food in her one and only parcel to him the first time he went out there, 'because he liked it when he was little'. He hid it in a sock until he came home, then binned it.

Many years ago my brother was in Bosnia and we too did the same thing. Aside from the magazines and biscuits, does he have a favourite chocolate? My brother has a thing for Cadbury's Twirls so we went him some of those (well wrapped obviously). Also a family photo is always good, maybe of a special occasion that has good memories.
As he was there for Christmas he also got a Christmas pudding. But as the above poster said, anything is really appreciated. My whole family made sure we wrote letters regularly too as my brother appreciated getting a hand written letter.
I'll be back if I think of anything else.0 -

Please don't even think of sending chocolate, its over 40C at least during the daytime at present so guaranteed to melt, if sending sweets think of stuff like jelly babies, fruit pastilles, dried apricots/fruit instead. Also it depends on location as life outside the main bases is a lot more basic so more useful are the wet wipes, shampoo sachets and any recent magazines.0 -

Sorry, didn't even think about the chocolate melting!0 -
I am signed up to adopt a squaddie, and my first box had some shower and shampoo in one. Foot wipes. insect repellent, some hot choc, brown sauce sachets, mini water pistols, haribo, nuts/zoo mag.
Hope that helps
Everything will be ok in the end, and if it isn't ok then it isn't the end0 -
We bought my OH a life timer clock which you can set to count down the days to important events - such as his finishing date! It's a bit of a gadget but it can also be used as an alarm clock.0
