"taking Adcal has actually lowered my D3 levels significantly"
Interesting - having a 300,000 iu injection did the same to me and dropped my calcium below range. I have seen two consultants since and neither has been able to explain why.
The hiccup with the injection meant that I had been taking a supplement for 6 months and was still grossly deficient.
Now taking 5,000 ius per day and hoping for the best.

I also take Vitamin D3 tablets but I refused to pay retail prices.
I found this company http://www.naturesaid.co.uk/health_supplements/bone_health/vitamin_d3/index.asp that sells at supplier to retail prices but to the general public, you could save alot of money doing it this way if you take the tablets regularly.
Just thaught it might help save you guys a few pennys!0 -
The long thread on cheap Vitamin D tests seems to have been deleted. For anybody wishing to see if it is worth taking supplements or to see if the supplements are having an effect it is now possible to get the test in the UK for £20, which seems to be a real bargain.

this is at City Hospital, Birmingham at an introductory price.0 -
Having taken the above test, my level is showing as 54 nmol. So by the testing hospital's standards, that is adequate. However based on other things I have read on here and elsewhere, I'd rather aim more towards 75 nmol as a bare minimum.
I have purchased some 5000iu softgels and plan to take one a day.
How long do you recommend I should wait before re-testing, to see what effect it may have had?
Many thanks.0 -

Notr got any recommendations for you but someone else no doubt will have (try Holland and Barratt as they have a promotion on some vitamins at the moment though).
I have been told (warned) that if my vitamin D levels are too low (test taken back in December, I get to see the results in March!!) I will have to have injections, I'd guess that could always be an option if your more brave then me! (I'm starting to wonder how much of it will be really my choice though as my bones are not good).
I have been reading about vitamin D3, some foods have it but the deal is that its fat soulable. I didn't know this-I know I don't eat enough essential fats so if you do take the pills try to take them with foods that have fat in.0 -

I had been taking the 5000iu capsules about 5 days a week for over a year and sat out a fair bit last summer. My result was Total vitamin124.5 nmol/L .
Obviously not seen too much sun over last few months (at least to sit out in) and have reduced capsules to 4 days a week.
So there is no exact science but will retest 12 months after first test.0 -
Hmm, I'd kind of hoped to monitor a bit sooner than that - I mean, a whole year seems a long time to leave it without checking?
But then again I don't really know which is why I asked. I had kind of thought more like maybe 3 or 6 months?0 -

Only indicated that I will wait 12 months as my level is more than adequate.
If you are just starting out on taking the capsules then 6 months seems to be fine for a new test.0 -
Interesting new test on the actual content of vitamin d supplements. I've been using the Dlux spray myself and to reverse a deficiency last year. Still it kinda sucks that it only had half the vitamin d content even if I didn't need the extra!
I still can't post links as I'm a new user but try googling
"Finnish uni finds D vitamin supplements deficient"
There's a link a the bottom of the article with the actual brands and how much they contain. Perhaps someone can post a link0
