I had vit D test at the Doctors.
I had a couple of injections to get levels up and was prescribed ergocalciferol but haven't been able to obtain it from chemists. GP told me to buy vit D supplements.
I've been getting these high dose vit D3< Nature's Best do same high dose but the fill quantity is less, so Sunvit work out cheaper.

I order mine online from iherb, softgels are much easier to swallow than the horse pills that are vitamin D in the UK- it was Ted Hutchison that first brought them to my attention. Good old Ted, he is missed, and his little habit of getting naked for 20 minutes outside every day ;)

I know by my skin when I need to up my D3 in winter, the tiching starts on my shins and if I forget to take an extra tablet it then adds on itching at my lower back. In times before I took vit D I used to suffer terribly with itch arms and shoulders too. Now that never happens.

So I've not had a test I go by my symptoms. This year I took 5000ui tablets and didn't need to take any extra in between.

That's interesting because I used to scratch my shins until blood beaded, I never linked it to a lack of Vit D.

And my shoulders and back drove me mad this year, itching and awful "creeping" feelings - tried all sorts of cream, even went to doctors and got eurecin cream?

I bought the D3 on the net from iherb in the states but I see you can get the 5000 unit ones on amazon now and several other UK sites.

Oh just checked, they actually seem to come from the states - for gawds sake dont click on the express delivery - it said something like £40!!

I think the ergocalciferol are D2 not D3 arent they? - have a look at that website Ted is on. They say avoid them as they arent natural supplements like D3.

The sunvit ones are only 1000 units arent they? I think that 5000 units a day are recommended?
  • Watch out for D2 - injections are likely to be D2 and they basically don't work. I had an injection of 300,000 ius and my already deficient level went DOWN!

Now taking 5,000 ius as a softgel every day. Due another test in July.

  • PS that thing about scratching your shins is interesting - I don't do that any more either!
