I have a pretty good idea, there are one or two that are usually better than the rest and I'll go to whichever is listed as being cheapest on that particular day. As you say 1p a litre makes little difference.

One interesting thing pp throws up is that in the area I currently live, and the area where I previously lived, branded fuel has often been cheaper than supermarkets. Currently there are three branded stations near me that are exactly the same price as the two supermarkets.

Where we live we have one branded always on the high side and 2 tiny independents that are off the scale.

It is 6 miles each way to towns that are mid range prices (incl Supermarkets) or 14 to the closest big town with loads of competition.

Between the two we have a few Shell stations that are mid range too that show up on PP. I don't really bother with it mainly because it doesn't really add anything for me.

I wouldn't mind but I can get fuel cheaper in deepest Derbyshire cheaper than I can get it where I live off the M6:mad:

    I find petrolprices.com useful.

I mainly use it to see which fuel stations are regularly cheapest in the area, then make sure I fill up when I'm in the area of one of the top few.

If you're expecting it to be more up to date than a couple of days ago then you need to find a different source of data!

Always phone before travelling, or check the price with google streetview.

Are you for real?? Phoning the petrol station is totally pointless and likely to cost you the price of a call which at a few pence loses any saving on the price of the fuel. Google streetview will show the price the last time the camera went past and I have only heard of them doing it once so far so that price is from last year at best.

In case you didn't know google streetview was generated from a camera on top of car its not a regular thing that gets updated daily, weekly or even annually.

  • Sorry to post in a long dormat thread: but I have enjoyed petrolprices for a couple of weeks. Despite its limitations, it still seems very useful. But the website is down at the moment - does anyone have any ideas of alternatives with similarly current data? The prices on My gas and What gas seem to be well out of date ...

  • Thanks for coming back so quickly.

It must be me being thick - but I tried www . petrolprices . com [I have inserted a space to allow me to post the URL on the forum - I'm not allowed to post a link] on both Firefox and IE and they come up with "Firefox can't find the server at w w w.pe trolprices .com." and "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" respectively.

Same if I try to sneak in through a search engine. Not had these problems before with this website, nor currently with any other than this.

    Ideas gratefully received!

    Works fine with Internet Explorer.
If you don't have the latest version, you will see a warning, but you can still access the site :)

Edit: Just tried it on Firefox too, and no issues there either.

It maybe your computer. Perhaps its infected.
Or perhaps your ISP has a problem.

working fine for me through chrome-

    http://www.petrolprices.com/
  • Thanks for your perseverance. I just tried on another laptop on the same network and that had the same message - so caled Talktalk and they say they are having the same problem. They say the problem must be at petrolprices' end but have no explanation as to why it works for you. Ah well ... I will just have to see what happens on the road! Thanks again.
