Car sounds like a boy racer!

Exactly that. I was doing 70mph 2 cars back from a car this happened to on the M1 about 6 months ago. The car in front swerved in time, I only just missed it and it went under a lorry behind me.
Could easily have been fatal. Or just another day on the road,
Run it into one of the major high street car fitters, most of them will price up whats wrong for free.
But it didn't and wasn't??, :think:I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
I dropped into the garage (ATS) at lunch, its actually the middle part of the exhaust and it will be £64. I produced my voucher and that brings that total down to £51.20.

1) It didn't hit, so its a moot point. An aeroplane dropping on to my house could be fatal too.
2) You were obviously traveling far too close to the car in front if you "only just missed it". Perhaps a flying exhaust may make you think twice about tailgaiting0 -

Right, knew this would happen!
Just called to see if its ready and they have told me that a shock absorber has burst and it would be £61 to repair.
Again, sorry to be dim (and also apologies in advance if this sparks another debate about me being irresponsible) but
a) does this need repairing immediately
b) is the £61 justified?
I've told them that I dont want it doing yet, as I need the car back this PM, but i'll bear it in mind.
Again, sorry if I haven't given enough information; I will have more in 30 mins when I've been the garage.0 -
I would have somebody else check the shock for you - if it's leaking you'll be able to tell yourself tbh. £61 doesn't sound alot for a garage to supply and fit a new shock though, especially seeing as you should really do them in pairs .0

Best get it fixed if one of the shock absorbers has failed. It will affect the handling and cornering.
When you get the car back you can do a basic bounce test yourself to check the scale of the problem. Push down on each corner, and let it bounce back up, if it bounces loads then its probably failed. If its too stiff in one corner, it'll also have failed. If all four corners seem the same maybe take a look underneath for any signs of fluid leaking from the shock absorber or take it to another garage for a second opinion before agreeing to have it fixed.0 -
shock absorbers on the punto rear do seem to go all of a sudden but its easy to check, look underneath and it will be literally covered in oil
front punto shockers mist for years without a concern \(remember the word is mist) if this is all you can see then maybe ask another opinion first
for £61 i guess its a rear one though ,these are approx £23 trade so price is reasonably fair, but ideally both should be done ,
might be wise to get someone in a backstreet batcave type of place to do both for a more reasonable sum (they take 10 minutes to fit)0 -

I was simply making the point that if the exhaust is blowing, I would get it fixed as soon as possible rather than leaving it, as they have been known to fall of and cause accidents. 6 years ago I had one fall off a hire van I was driving on an unlit section of the m42 at 1am. I couldn't find it. I had to get the police out who closed the road to look for it. These things do happen, but if the OP is aware that getting it fixed now rather than later would be better, then that's all I was saying.
As for me, I do 75k+ miles a year.
When I want driving advice from your good self, I'll ask for it.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

Yes, I too would never dream of changing just 1 shocker, a) they've both done the same mileage/the same age, and the replacement is bound to have slightly different characteristics, that accross the car could upset the balance.
They don't repair shocks, they simply replace them. If one had "burst" you would know from the drive, if it has stated leaking the bounce/rebound reduction will gradually increase.
Is this agarage you know/trust or just some National Crap outfit????
Get it checked if only to stop the flak from here;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
