Car sounds like a boy racer!

My little punto is making an awful sound from the exhaust.

The same thing happened about 4 years ago, I think they said the back box had gone.

The guys at the garage where laughing at me, saying that some boy racers pay for their car to sound this way.

Does anyone have an idea of how much this will cost to fix and also whether to is something that I have to do, as it will cause further damage, or I can leave it until I get fed up of the noise.

Many Thanks

Your exhaust has a hole in it or has corroded and snapped in two. The exhaust could shear and fall off.

Get it replaced as it would be an MOT failure.

Phone around for a few quotes to see how much it would be to replace.

Depending on the design and the location of the hole this could also screw up the lambda sensor readings, leading your car to run rich (use too much fuel) or run lean (very bad), so it's definitely worth fixing sooner rather than later.

Shouldn't cost too much if you go to an independent exhaust place though.

If it snaps and falls on the road it could kill someone in the chaos caused behind you, get it fixed asap.

It will depend which part of the exhaust is faulty and what punto you have, to determine the cost.

You could probably get the back box or anything rear of the catalytic converter done for upto £50 maximum, if it is the cat that is broken you will be looking more likely double that (£100), if the sensors need changing with the cat probably triple (£150).

This is all just a very rough guide though!!

Dont hold back there will you.. Just give the worst possible scenario possible.. Though how many deaths have occurred in the last 20 years due to an exhaust falling off would be an interesting statistic to back up your extremely outlandish statement.

    :rotfl: Berk.

Alternatively if it snaps and falls on the road it may fly, spear like, across the landscape knocking out that man who was just about to mug that old lady over there and thus save the day. Probably about as likely as your scenario.

Not being too reactive, it just sounds as if you've developed a hole in your rear silencer/tailpipe. It isn't terribly expensive to fix on such a small car and it will take just a few minutes if you walk into a dedicated tyre and exhaust fitters such as Kwik Fit, or anyone else you know and trust. I'd get it done asap though because you will be breaking the law by having increased emissions and excess noise coming from the vehicle and it's quite possible you could be putting your fuel consuption up. CArs tend to do that when the engine and exhaust system is out of kilter. It's not going to explode or fall off though. If it was really serious the guys who looked at it for you would have told you.

Average life of an exhaust is around 3-5 years, depending on mileage and other conditions with the cheaper replacement parts one buys these days. Manufacturers parts last longer but they are much more expensive.

Yes you have to do it. Currently your vehicle is not fit to pass an MOT and may also be in breach of legal noise limits.

It is currently a Traffic Police magnet.

seek out prices from motor factors, steer clear of chains like kw!k !!!!!! and halfrauds youll pay more with them.

it maynot be a exhaust you need but a simple gasket to seal the joints together.

if you replace the exhaust make sure you have new gaskets and clamps and rubber hangers.

correct excessive leaking exhaust noise levels can incure you a £30 fine.
