seek out prices from motor factors, steer clear of chains like kw!k !!!!!! and halfrauds youll pay more with them.

it maynot be a exhaust you need but a simple gasket to seal the joints together.

if you replace the exhaust make sure you have new gaskets and clamps and rubber hangers.

In all fairness I wouldn't try to put anyone off going to chains. They're very cheap and efficient. All an end user has to be aware of is that sometimes they will try to tell you that other parts are deficient too and need replacing. They may well be right but as long as a user sticks to their guns and only buys what they went in for they'll be ok. A heads up on another part going might help in diagnosis in the future but don't be tempted by their dire warnings of impending doom like "I wouldn't drive that car on that tyre anymore missus or it will explode and you'll finish up in orbit." :p

I disagree....to an extent - if you can find one of the chains and they are indeed cheapest then by all means take it there and have them do it - but beware the general standard of employee technical knowledge seems to be particularly low, leading to "you need this and that" as above, when infact there is either !!!!!! all wrong with this and that or the problem actually lies elsewhere.

The standard of work is also, generally, shocking. Previous company cars have had to go to probably the most well known of this lot for bits and pieces - I can absolutely guarantee you I had more of a clue than some of their employees and I ain't no mechanic!

That may well be the case but fitting a tailpipe and box is hardly rocket science :p

Well there you have it, the "experts" state you are fine to drive away to your hearts content with the rotting exhaust .

Back box supplied and fitted by an indie garage won't cost that much. I had a full exhaust excluding cat fitted last year for £130 while I waited.

I don't think that's the case at all. I've read through several very helpful posts, all of which indicate that the OP should have the matter addressed as soon as possible but trying to allay fears that the fault will cause serious damage to the car or a third party. My own post was exactly that.

I think it's time for you and I to sit down with a pint old bean and have a good old rant - that'll clear the tension. :p

I think OP is a woman so perhaps we should refer to the cat by it's full name of catalytic converter, otherwise she may think she's getting a free moggy with her new exhaust :D

I'm not suggesting that women are stupid by saying that. I'm saying that technical terms are confusing to anyone who hasn't heard them before ;)

And presumably that because she is a woman she is more likely to be confused by 'technical terms' than a man? ;)

Not being too reactive, it just sounds as if you've developed a hole in your rear silencer/tailpipe.

I thought everybody had one of those ;) but it appears a select few on this thread have them in the wrong place as they are talking complete sh*te :rotfl:
