His room had a 42" plasma TV and x box always left on, bedroom light with 3 x 50 watt bulbs that was only switched off when I did it as he kept his curtains pulled all the time to avoid glare on the plasma screen, laptop always left on, multiple chargers always plugged in and worst of all - iron regularly left on all day while I was at work. :eek:niceday999 wrote: »your son and mine must be twins......exactly the same...his bedroom always like the black hole of calcutta and all the lights on...and velux blind and curtains pulled !!!!
laptop on, straighteners plugged in....lol
OMG, how strange to have the curtains closed all day - but I guess that's a matter of preference. They'll probably grow out of it...
I sometimes think that teenage boys inhabit a twilight world, spending so much time on their games consoles and computers that they only emerge to forage for food and then crawl back into their lairs. I knew a few like that when I was growing up, their social skills were very poor and they were always pale and sickly looking. We used to pity them! :rotfl:
Golden Anemone, never mind the electricity, you're lucky the house didn't burn down with the iron being left on!!! Why was he ironing in his room anyway? You electricity bill will be much reduced now anyway!
niceday999 - straighteners???? :rotfl:niceday999 wrote: »no sorry they are an overflow as we only have a underneath worktop fridge and freezer in kitchen.....not much room for 4 people........
But don't you have food in them? You can't switch them off or they will defrost...Get to 119lbs! 1/2/09: 135.6lbs 1/5/11: 145.8lbs 30/3/13 150lbs 22/2/14 137lbs 2/6/14 128lbs 29/8/14 124lbs 2/6/17 126lbs

The iron was downstairs rather than in his room but it was he that left it on. I went through a phase of taking it to work with me for a week after every time I found it left on and that did improve things a bit.0 -

3-bedroom semi, electric used for cooking, 1 fridge freezer, TV, shower, washing machine etc.. Tumble drier is rarely used (only in case of absolute emergency!)
Water heating for dishes, shower etc by immersion, but only when the solar panel doesn't deliver, and anything that can be cooked in my Remoska is (thanks MSE!)
NIE have just reduced my payment to £16 pm0 -
My last DD was for £71 on a 3 bed semi 2 adults 2 xbox, wii, computer, LCD mad kids:eek:
I am renting at present on top up metered supply and find £10 a week more than adequate ? I thought top up was supposed to be more expensive than DD ? we still have washing machine going all time, electric shower, 2 TV's consoles, 2 computers etc... and we even have a dishwasher now (these are great toys BTW:)) I can't understand why I am paying so little in comparison what I used to pay. Mind you I won't be phoning NIE to complain:rotfl:I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:0 -
Yes this is also a real bug bear for me at the moment, 2 adults, 3 bed terrace and paying £67 per month all electric no gas.
Trying to switch everything off as well but DH not very co-operative. I've plugged in an electricity monitor and I'm now a bit of a switch off fanatic. The monitor helps me notice when something has been left switched on and I search the house for the offending appliance, usually a laptop or something when my stepchildren are staying over.
I've seen somewhere that a half full freezer can be more efficient if the empty space is filled with scrunched up newspaper.
I've also bought an 'energy wizard', which I cant really vouch for as I cant do the maths but the reviews were all very persausive. I heard about it from the Moneymagpie website. Apparently it helps reduce energy consumption, something to do with electricity being transmitted in uneven waves which is inefficient and this thing evens out the waves.
The minitor has really brought it home to me just how much electric is wasted on boiling too full a kettle, I only boil the bare minimum now.
And dont get me started on spotlights, I have them in the kitchen, landing, bathroom and en-suit, you want to see the monitor shoot up when these lights are switched on.
Nope, I dont care what anyone says, switch off, switch off, swith off, its just such a waste to leave things on unnecessarily.
Sorry for the rant.0 -
3 bed semi 2 adults 1 toddler. we put 15 pw into the keypad meter. we have tv amp x box blu ray wii and speakers, a laptop, a desktop, 50 litre tropical fish tank, electric shower, many charged items phones ipods kindles etc, hot water heater for dishes and baths. i think we are very lucky considering the amount of electricity we go through. Could you tell me where you got your monitor ??
Thanks Pennywise20 -
Detached house , 2 adults & 3 kids , 5 tvs , 3 x boxs , dishwasher , washing machine , 2 freezers paying £80 per month .
Electric used to be £110 a month until we installed a wood burning stove with back boiler to heat the water instead of the immersion heater .0 -
Hi pennywise2, I was very lucky the 'Owl' energy monitor was given to all employee's at my work as the company I work for are on a real drive to be green and ethical. But I believe they can be picked up on ebay for around £30. My sister also had one before me and when she visited my house she stopped me from overfilling my kettle when making us a cuppa, just goes to show that it certainly makes you more aware of wasting energy.
The 'energy wizard' is also on ebay for about £15, but as I said I can't swear that it actually works.0
