How to resign

Hi everyone, first time poster on this board was wondering if anybody could help me.

I've worked for 3 years in a job which I hate, my boss is a bully and most of her anger gets directed at me. She really doesn't like me at all, so when I got offered a new job on Friday I was over the moon, better hours more pay and hopefully a much better environment. Only thing is, I only accepted the job today because I am terrified of telling my boss that I'm leaving.

She found out I went to a interview last year and she was literally shouting at me about how hard she's worked to get me a promotion in my place (she hasn't, 3 years and I've got nowhere and just found out today that there was never any chance of me getting anywhere because HR wont allow for anybody to move onto a higher payband ect because of funding) and how disappointed she was with me and how I'd never get anywhere in the other job.

I have written a very basic resignition letter but now my stomach is churning and I have no idea how to give it to her or what to say. I know that shes going to make the next four weeks (my resignition period) a living nightmare and I can handle that but its just telling her that I'm so scared of. Is it unreasonable to ask for somebody else to be there when I tell her I'm leaving? Or would that just make it worse? Also, I have a holiday booked for the 20th of this month, can she take this off me?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated- I'm telling her at 9am tomorrow morning!

Thanks

I have been in a similar position, and know how you feel.
Smile inside, afterall you are escaping! Don't let her take that feeling away from you.
Just be concise and to the point, it will be over before you know it, I would simply approach say you would I have been offered a great opportunity & therefore need to give 4 weeks(or a months) notice & hand over your letter. End with an ok? and try to move away.
    Good luck.

I would just hand in your notice with a smile on your face, make sure it's in her hand when she gets it, you have handled her for three years so another month should be a breeze. With any luck if your boss is that much of a cow she'll say you can go now on full pay.

So turning my notice into a paper aeroplane throwing it at her and running isn't the best way to do it then? :( Only joking, although this was one of the more serious options that I mulled over today, I decided against it. Problem with her is, you can never just do something and do a runner, she has to speak to you IN PRIVATE in this little dusty dark room thats only ever used when shes bollocking somebody. Oh pants :( Thanks for the advice guys

Bless ya hun I know this feeling too ...

I worked for a manger simular to yours (where do these people pop up from? lol) and know she was going to make my life hell for the 4 weeks so decided to hand it to her with a member of HR there. I explained in great detail why I was leaving and said that I feel that this was my only option. HR was shocked to say the least!! Long short of it was knowing I got to say my piece infront of her without her making me feel like *&!*!

Just think this time next month you will be in a better job with a new fresh challenge and she will still be there with nowhere to go lol xx Is there anyone you trust or HR person who could go in with you?

Best wishes hun and good luck :-D

We don't have an 'in house' HR team, although I do have a union rep, would this be something that they could deal with? The annoying thing is, I told my bosses boss today and she was really happy for me! Why can't my boss be like that :( I can't sit still, every hour that goes by I'm getting more an more terrified. This woman is HORRIBLE. She's made the last three years hell, but now I can't even get excited about leaving!!
  • Whatever you do, listen to this before you do it..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPrSVkTRb24&feature=related

Alternatively, the version from Office space (great movie) -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Me0_7U7iTI8

Ringo, that song is brill, I might rewrite my letter and just include the lyrics from there :D
  • Personally, I'd advise to keep a resignation letter short and sweet. Never burn bridges when quitting. You can get some good templates here: http://www.i-resign.com/uk/home/

Oh, and watch Office Space. I use to work for a Big American IT firm and the parallels were uncanny

Oh god, just realised... I'll have to do an exit interview too. Think my stomach has just tied itself into a figure of eight knot.

No you don't.. just decline it and ask if they have an questionnaire instead. I'm sure there's no obligation to have an exit interview (although you'll probably get pulled into a meeting with your manager to discuss it)

Be strong! Think of it this way - you are a resource that helps your company create money. You get to choose what company you help create money for. The power is all in your hands, not theirs.
