Holiday to Algarve - Should we go or change it

Have booked a holiday to the Algarve, with all that has happened there over the last few weeks, should we be worried? Have been given the option to change if we want to (at a cost) but wondering if we're worrying unnecessarily. What do others think?

I'd still go - a very very slim chance of being attacked compared to other possible accidents, plus they'll be worried about the impact on tourism so the police should be more in evidence. If you're that worried, just avoid the areas they mention in the wee small hours of the morning. No idea of the statistics, but I'd probably go along with the "more likely to be run over by a bus" theory. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

I knew about that, but thought I had missed another uprising!
Portugal is a lovely place, I would not cancel your trip because of one unfortunate incident that could happen anywhere.Gone ... or have I?0 -
Thanks for your replies, was thinking the same thing but someone has spoken to hubby and put him off. Am able to change it right up to two weeks before so shall see how it goes. If it was three portuguese people who had been attacked I don't suppose we would have heard about it but because they were british/irish we have.0

Understand your concerns, but, you only have to pick up any UK local paper & read about far worse happening on your own doorstep.
Go on holiday, relax & enjoy. Portugal's a lovely place!"Hope for the Best

we were out in Albufeira at Easter staying near Old Town and it was as enjoyable as always. I don't venture along to the strip I went there once and didn't like it too much hustle and bustle. You don't say where you are going.......0

there have only been two british men murdred by gangs of youths and one knifed who survived, the terroist threat isnt that high, look at the foriegn embassy and try and take their advice.
Whever you go there are people who could attack you but the likelyhood is slim, like any holiday be carefulNeeding to lose weight start date 26 December 2011 current loss 60 pound Down. Lots more to go to get into my size 6 jeans0 -
We visited Albufeira last August . It was our first & last time .
My advice would be to stay way from The Strip . The reason I say this is that a friend of ours was mugged at knife point minutes after we left her .
A car with 2 men & a woman pulled up asked the time and before she knew it the woman was out of the car threatening to cut her throat.
We were offered drugs many times in both the Old Town & The Strip .
In saying that, this was just our experience 1000s of tourists travel there each year .0 -
Just back there on 4 june...its all fine.....we never saw or heard any trouble.....we were back at the hotel by midnight most nights, and both in old and new town and no trouble of any sort !0

We are visiting Albufeira for the first time in August, renting a villa with hubby, daughter and son in law and four grandchildren and I must admit I am slightly nervous about the holiday. Does not help that my elderly mother dislikes us going on holiday anyway and at every opportunity is asking us "why are we going to a poor country (euro) where people are getting stabbed" no doubt she'll have a bad turn just before the holiday !!! I'm not letting her know though that she's unnerving me. In the past though when we have been on holiday together with the children being so young we are back at our accommodation by about 9pm at the latest anyway.0
