Getting out of a TalkTalk Broadband Contract - £70?

Options
I keep seeing mentions of being able to leave an 18 month TalkTalk broadband contract at a charge of £70. Is this still possible?

Is this just a one-off fee and you're out full stop, or do you also have to pay the monthly bill for those months remaining on your contract?

Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks.

You pay on a monthly basis, depending on how many are left.

    It is set by Ofcom.

If you are a TalkTalk Broadband & Phone customer, unless you take TalkTalk Plus, it is £8 for every month remaining in your minimum period.

    Thanks.
So is the £70 charged regardless of whether you're still in a contract or not?

No. Why would you pay anything if you are already out of your minimum term contract?
Where do you get the £70 from? The amount will vary, as fully explained by i8.

I think the confusion with the £70 is that TalkTalk are on a MPF/LLU network and as a result they don't issue a MAC for you to leave their network. I had this problem when I tried quitting them last year where they just refused to issue me a MAC and most providers were unable to offer me their broadband/phone without bringing me onto their network at a cost of £70.

Plusnet did let me switch for no cost.

As for buying out your contract, I'm afraid you will struggle to do that without paying off how many every months are remaining.

    Thanks for the advice.

The £70 just came from what I'd seen others referring to on the boards.

I don't seem to have a copy of a contract with the letters and general T&Cs I received when I went on to this package, so I'm not sure they've provided me with anything confirming the 18 months - don't know if this would help my case for wanting to leave earlier?

No it wouldn't, you have accepted the T&C's by using the service. The T&C's are shown on the website.
If you want to break your contract, you'll be charged a variable ETC-not £70.

Any ideas where I might find details of the minimum term I agreed to? So far, the only confirmation I can get is them telling me on the phone - shouldn't this have been in the paperwork they sent me somewhere?

Depends when you took out the contract, but all TT contracts until recently were 18m or 24m. The fact that you don't have a piece of paper stating the minimum term is not going to void your contract. It's up to you to check the terms when you sign up.

    Hi meryll83,

if you register on https://www.talktalkmembers.com and ask the question we will be able to help.

The £70 mentioned was the old early cessation fee before OFCOM made a ruling that it was too high. Now the charge is £8 per month remaining for Essentials customers and £13 for Plus customers.

Is this the only charge, or do you also have to pay your usual bill on top of this?
