DS2's laptop will not connect to the internet. Wireless will connect (choice of 2 networks) but states No Internet Access.

I've tried following the advice on the screen but it hasn't solved the problem.

It is a Dell Inspiron using google chrome as the browser - any ideas please?

could you answer the following please?

    1. what do you use to connect to the internet?
    2. do you use a wireless router?
    3. can other laptops/desktops/devices connect?
    4. if you are using only wireless, have you tried a direct connection using a network cable?
    5. have you tried to delete the wireless profile and recreate it from scratch?

    1. A wireless router is one of the options. A virgin combined modem/router is the other - neither working
    2. yes
    3. My pc is working fine using the same wireless connection. DS1's laptop is connecting but it is not great - slow
    4. No - not sure how to do that
    5. The virgin option is newly installed but it wasn't working on the other one before that.

Does that help? Thanks for your reply

    Malware scan?

Download, install, update and run a Quick Scan with Malwarebytes' AntiMalware. When complete, choose 'Remove Selected' if there is anything to remove and then Reboot your computer.

After restart, open the program again and go to 'Logs'. Double click on the log produced for today and post the contents here.

If anything was found on the first scan then at this point you should run a Full Scan and then follow the instructions above in order to produce a second log.

stilltheone. The laptop will not connect to the internet so I cannot update the malwarebytes software to run. I might be able to get DH to download it onto a stick when he comes home from work much later this evening.

Why can't you download and save Malwarebytes on to a 'stick'? Surely that is not beyond your capability?

Whilst you are at it, you will need the Malwarebytes Offline Rules on the stick too.

Once on the stick, install the main program, obviously bypassing the Update option. Once installed, reboot and then run the mbam-rules.exe file.

This will update Malwarebytes without you having to connect to the Internet.

Then you can run the scans.

It's very simple. You can do it.

Thanks for your vote of confidence but I haven't ever put anything onto a 'stick' also I don't have a 'stick' and the 2 which DS2 has 'may have viruses as they have been in the school computer'.

I would be willing to try if I had a stick honest. I have ran the short Malware scan which is 132 days out of date - oops and nothing came up. There is an icon on the bottom right saying update aniVir Desktop windows defender needs to scan your computer - is that good? Is it genuine?

    No, it is bogus.

If you have a CD, you can put the files on to a CD. Do you have a blank CD?

Switch off one of the routers, the Virgin one since that is new, so that you are only concentrating on one.
You will probably have an ethernet cable with one if the routers. It's got a square plug on each end and there will be a socket to match the plug in both the laptop and the router.
Use that to connect the laptop to the router and see what you get.
Your other computer will confirm that the router is providing an internet connection.
Once connected to the internet you can try the malwarebytes stuff.
