6 week post natal check up after c section

Hi,
just after some advice.

I had a c section 5 weeks ago and have tried today to get a post natal doctors appointment for in the next week or so but there's nothing available until week commencing 20th june.

what does this app consist of and is it absolutely necessary? My main reason for going was to get the ok to drive but i've spoken to my insurance who have basically said it's up to me and when i feel fit and healthy enough to drive and that they don't need any sign off form from doc or such like, I need to be able to drive next week as I have some appointments. assuming i'd be ok to just make the decision to drive myself?

From what I remember they just checked for infection in your scar oh and will talk to you again about contraception :D

as long as your insurance is o kwith your driving you are fine just beware of any sudden movements can jar your scar and can hurt

Agree with the post above. My GP gave me the go-ahead to drive after 4 weeks but I did have some infection in my scar. Just make sure you are ok with driving. Oh and congrats on the baby!
Thank you to everyone for sharing competitions!

You basically need to make sure that you can do an emergency stop without hurting yourself or others. It is important to see your GP as it completes your cycle of maternity care. The GP should also make sure that you are feeling well emotionally and adjusting to your role as a parent x
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

I was never signed off to resume driving after my C section (nor other abdo surgeries). Insurance always said it was my judgement if I was safe to drive or not!

Take it easy for the first few times, it's amazing how much twisting in your seat you do in a car when driving and parking.
  • My 6 week check consisted of being asked did I feel ok - that was it! I did ask the doc to look at my c-section scar but she wasn't going to. I guess if I wasn't feeling ok, it might have been a longer session!
It was at the same time as baby's check which seemed more detailed.

I never really stopped driving. I drove myself to hospital to have my c-section after labour started prematurely (already had a section booked for a few weeks later), and I then drove about a week later. I called my insurance company (direct line) and was told that it was a myth for the 6 week wait...phew! Just as well for me as I was in the middle of a nasty break up and needed to get myself and baby out of a very unhealthy situation for us both involving alcohol and violence.... but's that's a whole different story!
  • It is just one of the few appointments you have with the GP to check you are ok.

I would suggest still going to it. There is always something you could do with advice on when you get in there. Always good to get the scar checked.

    thanks guys

i think i'll have a practice drive round the housing estate when quiet to make sure i can do emergency stop/park etc so i can make my app's next week

i will still make the docs app for later on - just won't be at 6 weeks due to them been fully booked!

I had a 6 weeks appointment for myself and a 8 week appointment for the baby.
The medical check for the baby is quite lengthy and cover everything you can think off.
    My 6 week check was:
Doc: How are you feeling? Me: Fine.
Doc: I'll take your blood pressure...... Blood pressure OK.
Doc: You had a caesarian, is the scar healing fine? Me: yes.
Doc: I'll have a look..... It looks OK.
    End of appointment!
I guess the purpose is to give the new mum the opportunity to mention anything she has concerns about?
