Norton Internet Security 2007, which one?

Hi guys

I have Norton Internet Security 2006 and it's due for renewal soon. The online automatic renewal prices seem a rip off. I have looked on net and I can buy the following:

Norton Internet Security 2007 £24.97
Norton Internet Security 2007 (upgrade edition) £35.99

Why is it more expensive to upgrade than to buy originally? Which do I want?

Btw, I know you can get this kind of software free, but I'm quite happy with my Norton. Not very MSE I know, sorry guys

Please help, I'm confused!

Thanks :D

  • Here's a bit of personal experience:

I had Nortan Anti Virus for 4 years and had 6 viruses that I had to submit to Symantec to sort out.

I have had AVG Free for nearly a year and had one virus that the program sorted no problem.

I had McAfee Internet security suite for 6 months and got Trojan after Trojan after Trojan attacking my computer.

I installed Zonealarm Free (for the second time thought you got a better level of security by paing for it) and I have had no problems since.

My advice? Get AVG free and Zonealarm both work well and cost you nowt!

DO NOT pay for these they are a rip off as mentioned there are free security systems which do as good if not better job.
I have used norton and mcafee then two years ago i got avast for free and have used it ever since with no problems unlike the previous two
  • I've used AVG & McAfee in the past and although AVG is good and free ive found Norton easy to use and less hassle.
I paid about £16 for Norton Internet Security 2006 off eBay and its legit. You only get the CD and activation code sent to you but thats all you need.
The little things like doing the updates automatically without interfering is nice. But thats my opinion.
Ususally if there is a new virus out there, the paid software will get updated first before any free version and that includes AVG.
  • Thanks guys.

I had quite a few problems with the free stuff and since getting Norton I've been trouble free, so I really would like to stick with that.

Please can someone tell me the difference between the normal version and the upgrade version. Why is the upgrade version more expensive?

    Thanks :)

Price! As a new customer you can buy it at a competitive price, they then assume that most users will take the upgrade path for convenience. This is just the way that they choose to market the product.

  • Yeah i'll be using Norton again when it expires next year so prob end up buying it again rather than do a upgrade. There are loads of 'Cracks' out there where if you put in a registration code for Norton, you can use it for life without expiring. But I dont wanna encourage you in doing something illegal.

Littlemissmoney, I'm in exactly the same situation as you.

I've been wondering the same thing so I'm glad to have found this thread. My subscription runs out on Boxing Day and I keep getting reminders to renew online, which costs (once you add on the VAT) £42.35.

I wondered whether it would be feasible to just spend £25 on a new one and uninstall the 2006 version and install the new one which gives you a years worth of updates. I'm just a bit concerned that the system may not allow you to do this, but I can't see how it could stop you once the old one is uninstalled.

Being a committed money saver I too have spent years with the free downloads like AVG and Zonealarm, but these allowed several PIFs in so our information, including bank account details and passwords etc, was being fed back to someone else. My ebay account was hijacked and every time I changed my passsword, and even ID, someone was right behind me, keeping up with all the changes. I just count myself lucky that we realised what was happening before our bank accounts were emptied.

In the end our computer was so badly infested with all this stuff that we binned it and bought a new one along with Norton Internet Security, and I can honestly say we have not had a problem since then.

Saving money on freebies cost us a lot more than we saved, and I think this is a case where you get what you pay for.

So, my question still remains for anyone who is a bit more of a technie than me - can I just uninstall the old one, and install the new one?

Help would be much appreciated - I don't mind paying for it but don't want to part with more than I have to!
Oh dear, here we go again.

You should be able to install the new CD and it will detect the old version and install over it. Check Ebay and you should get it for less than £20

jennyjelly, the £42.35 version the online alert thing suggests you buy is for Norton Internet Security 2007, not the upgrade version (I think). The upgrade version is even more. So even if you do an automatic upgrade it doesn't sell you the upgrade version!? So it must be fine to buy the non-upgrade version independently.

So who is the upgrade version for!? I'm so confused!

  • Hmm, I've just noticed... if you look at the original prices, the upgrade version was cheaper. Maybe this explains it. No-one *would* buy the upgrade version since the price cuts have made the original cheaper.

Although... that doesn't explain why the upgrade version is more expensive then the non-upgrade one if you buy online through the alert thing :s
