Rest assured if it has been reported something will be done.

Sorry but I beg to differ- since localised fraud depts have been centralised the process seems to be a lot tighter, eg-less people are investigated. If the fraud scores low-middle, the dept may decide not to pursue the case, they may not have the time or the resources. The only people that will know this are the fraud team dealing with the case. I've seen casess where people send in tapes and photos, there was one of Mr B sent in on a regular basis, it showed him in his allotment, and claimed he was a member on the local working men's commitee. He was iro benefits, but him doing light work in his allotment and being on a commitee(sp?) had no bearing at all on his benefit, so although the referrals were made by some-one, the case wasn't worth pursuing.

OK I'll try and tell the full story. A couple in their 60's who I know really well (and no it's not my parents) are claiming full benefits and housing benefit but they have their son living with them. Their son is taking the p**s in a big way as he is the manager of a casino in London and earns thousands of pounds a month. He's always jetting off to foreign countries and going on weekends away, buying designer clothes and going out for posh meals. But he doesn't even give them the money for a pint of milk. He's living there rent free and doesnt give them a penny. He's been living there about a year now in this way. They have given up their bed for him and are now sleeping on sofas in the front room. I think it should be him who pays the rent and foots the bill for the food and bills rather than him live rent free and they struggle to make ends meet.

  • The only thing about reporting the couple is that they will suffer, not the son. Unless you reported the son.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Out of the 9 people I work with 4 of them have extra cash in hand jobs.
    It does make me mad.

One of them takes home from a cash job almost £6K a year.

How can I report the son? He's not on any benefit.

My friend works for the benefits agency. She told me that unless the fraud is quite a large amount (£200+ per week) the benefits agency won't even investigate as they get so many tip offs they couldn't possibly investigate them all.
  • I reported someone via the web 2 weeks or so ago, i doubt whether anything will come of it.This person has her boyfriend living with her (past 9 months or so), she is on benefits as a single parent. He works 2 jobs (1 full, 1 part-time) and they have decided not to tell social as they are better off..she refuses to work (in her late 40's & never worked, always on benefits) & he has said that if they have to go legal he can't afford to live with her (so much for wanting to live there cos he loves her!). She has her grown up child there paying board (not told social)

Please excuse me if this sounds rude but it's not meant to be.

If I was you I wouldn't have reported the couple at all. If the son is the sort of man that lets his elderly parents sleep on the sofa then he isn't the sort that will pay up when they are skint through having their benefits taken away.

I used to work for the benefit service, one day someone spotted a van, with the name of a kitchen firm on it, pull up outside and 6 guys got out dusted themselves off and came in to sign on. The fraud team came in and observed them, followed them for a few weeks but dropped the case because of lack of evidence. I don't suppose they have got any better since then!

  • I didn't mean my post as a criticism BS. I thought maybe the son was doing something illegal. As for the parents, they probably haven't given a thought to their benefits while the son is staying with them. I agree that benefit fraudsters should be stopped. One of my neighbours was an illegal childminder for 5 years. Another neighbour who is a registered childminder reported her but it took several months for them to visit her. They visited her just after the school day and she had 4 children "just playing" at her house. She wasn't prosecuted but had to sign off there and then to avoid being charged. She had a "bad back" and had been claiming IB for 10 years. She didn't have to pay anything back but is still mad at the person who reported her. She claimed DLA as well.
