I can understand for a few hours saying to wait and see what happens but not for as long as this, the poor dog must have been so distressed and your porr friend as well

Thank you ever so much for those links happy.

I've just had a look through the rcvs website and the section about making complaints and this bit is weird:

    2) Please look at what we can and cannot do (the extent of our jurisdiction) before making a complaint. For example, we cannot deal with complaints about the level of fees or allegations of negligence, which are dealt with by the courts (see Advice Note 3 and Advice Note 4 at https://www.rcvs.org.uk/advicenotes); neither can we deal with ‘performance’ (competence) complaints unless they are serious enough and there is evidence that they could amount to ‘serious professional misconduct’. We can deal with health complaints through our new Protocol for Health Complaints against Registered Veterinary Surgeons.

Weird because surely there is nothing else that you can complain about?? I am going to keep on reading though and when she is up to it, sit her down with the document and work out what we can do.
  • what a sad and horrible situation for owner and dog.

I know I would be pretty peed off with the vet.

Terrible situation and I think id have probably contacted another vet had it been me. But, sorry I have to say, having knowledge a bad experience - in fact death - with a previous dog, why on earth didnt your friend have the dog spayed before all this happened.
  • What a horrible, horrible situation - your poor friend and her dog (and the wee ones).

I'm afraid that I do have to say that if it had been me I would've taken her to another vet (even more so given her previous knowledge of things going wrong - I am also very surprised she would want to risk a pregnancy knowing what her friend's dog had been through).

With regard to the level of fees paid, this is very hard as the costs vary enormously not only in different parts of the country but practices in the same towns.

However, if there was no overnight stay then she should certainly be not paying for one - ask for a fully itemised bill and query any discrepancies with the Senior Partner at the practice.

Also, document everything - the times she phone/went to the vets, what was said etc.

    I came across the following:

Good luck & I hope "mum" is up an about soon.

  • Unfortunately it does happen:

Someone I know had a lab who obviously was in discomfort and had a sore tummy - they phoned the vet who said he's prob eaten something he shouldn't and he should be fine in a couple of hours. He got worse, they phoned back - same thing. This happened repeatedly until they put the poor dog in the car and phoned the vet and said they were on their way. Unfortunately he died on the way - turned out they'd been on the beach and he'd obviously found a discarded BBQ stick that someone had just chucked away and it'd ripped his insides. Horrible - still brings tears to my eyes.

Another friend lost their dog and found it a few hours later in a ditch looking like it'd been hit by a car. Took it to the emergency vets who gave it a quick once over and said it was fine. Dog didn't improve over the weekend (this was on Sat) so they took it back on Mon AM and this vet actually bothered to x-ray it and discovered it had a broken pelvis.

My wee girl cat came from a litter who were rejected at 3.5 weeks as her owner took her to be spayed and the vet did it - even though it must've been obvious she was a nursing mother.

All the above vets are the nearest ones to me - needless to say, I still go to the vets from my previous address even though it's a longer trip, I trust them.

My friend had wanted her dog to have pups for a long time,

    WHY?

Yes, it is a terrible situation but WHY did you friend wanted for her dogs to have pups?

Sorry, when any of my lot is not well I never phone for advice, I get them to the vets ASAP.

Very, very upsetting situation BUT your friend selfishness caused this to her poor dog.

Just horrible. And this is why my dogs are spayed as soon as is possible after their first season. However, I want to be able to offer her some help when the time comes. I've told her to give it a week or so to get over it forst, then we can deal with it.

You can get the dog spayed before the 1st season also

    saves even more hassle

Don't be such a self righteous, unfeeling cow. Or if you can't help it, don't post unless you actually have something constructive to offer.

There is nothing evil in wanting a dog to have pups. Have you been brainwashed???
