Tesco had me arrested !!!

The level of proof for shop lifting is really quite high. ~the shop has (burden of proof) that the "customer" intentionally stole the products, rather than left something in a trolley. The case collapsed as soon as the cashier admitted that the women pointed out the clothes to her. End of. The manager probably did not realise this and acted on "good faith" ... however he should have backed down when the cashier admitted this. However, he probably felt his pride was dented, especially if he had already called the police. Police were duty bound to investigate, plus finding real criminals is much harder than being handed them on a plate.
Generally Tesco head office are quite good with customers, but stores are run by the store managers, and these are really hit and miss. In my opinion, more often miss than hit.
The fact it it was jobsworths who will have had evidence that the customer pointed out the items (witness, cctv) but continued to try to prosecute.
They would be laughed out of court as the policeman spoke to the cashier, will be able to access CCTV, etc.
I would rewrite to the CEO asking for this to be dropped, threatening to go to the press or sue for deformation of character - due to the attempted action being carried out in light that there is evidence to show that the Cashier did not price all items identified to her.

OP - what was the final outcome?
AS FOR vintage_beanpole
"it's not for security staff to decide what is/is not a genuine case"
It is their job to access if a crime has been commited to refer to police. As the items were pointed out to the cashier.
Cashiers mistake, at least 50%, should she pay half?
You made a mistake for which you really ought to pay in my opinion. But that's just me.
You have a black and souless heart, vintage beanpole............... Have you ever wondered what

One thing crosses my mind. Should you ever need an enhanced CRB check, it may well show up that you were arrested on suspicion of theft.
You'll be amazed how such a stupid thing can cause so much trouble :-(0
