Whois search sites are very useful and the 'betterwhois' recommended by rex well worth using.
But the problem I've found with whois search websites is the time taken to complete an enquiry, because it's first necessary to query the whois site and then, when the result comes up, go to the domain address and run the query again for more detailed results.
Godaddy, which unfortunately seems to be favoured by many suspect domains, can be notoriously slow in responding.
It's why I prefer dedicated search software. A one-click search with smartwhois of freekeyring.com immediately yielded:

Whereas the whois search websites necessitated two look-ups that actually took an age to complete because of godaddy's sluggish response.
A warning thread such as this one, which flags up alerts over several different sites, can therefore result in a fair bit of time being spent on checking the results, whereas dedicated search software rapidly hops from one query to another: I searched all the freexxxxxx.com sites mentioned here in under a minute with smartwhois.
That particular software came courtesy of a site called
http://www.giveawayoftheday.com
which is recommended on the Freebies board of MSE.
Software offered there is in full and licensed, but the catch is it's only available for 24 hours and must be activated within that time. After 24 hours it's no longer available. However, the site does sometimes re-run a software offering so it's worth keeping an eye on it.
smartwhois isn't unique; there are similar programs out there, though whether any of them are free, I don't know.0 -
Jaspalc (and anyone else interested in who is searching):
I've just waded through comments of smartwhois users on the giveaway site and one in particular stood out, a recommendation of:
I've just tried it and the free search result came back as fast, and as detailed, as that provided by the $29 smartwhois software.
So though I'm happy to have smartwhois for nowt, adding the domaintools url to Favourites / Links in your tool bar, seems to be just as fast and just as good! (Update: the whois search facillity can be downloaded as a little program to sit in the system tray: even better. . .)0 -
found this one its called find ip address http://www.webyield.net/domainquery.htmldont drink and drive:beer:

symy -- thanks for that but isn't it just another double-checker site (you run your whois query, then when the result comes up, have to go query it with godaddy or wotever to get the full version).
This morning I've been swapping between smartwhois and the little button now sitting in my system tray next to the clock -- the project whois button downloaded from domaintools mentioned above.
Amazing: it does just what the paid-for software does, there's no need to double-search at all.
* Sorry: should've said, you just right-lick the button / icon, whatever happens to be on your screen at that moment, it'll provide whois details without you even having to enter in anything at all. Yoo-hoo, Martin!!:rotfl:0 -
. . . though right-clicking is just as effective.

I personally wouldn't use downloaded software to do a whois when sites are just as good and don't require anything on your computer. The more software you have running on a computer, the more it will slow down over time. I've still got an old W98 computer that is quicker than a lot of new ones I've used recently. This is because I've kept the system clean, and not clogged it up with loads of un-needed software.
The better whois gives first time details over 50% of the time. For .co.uk names, Nominet gives the information every time straight away. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

If you have firefox, you can download a utility called ShowIP :
http://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/590/
You can add any site you want to it- I have McAffee SiteAdvisor and now BetterWhoIs setup!0
