    Hi Volupturaptor,

I buy mine from lidl. I also mix bread flour with plain flour 50/50 and it tastes just as good as bread made with all strong bread flour, but costs a bit less. :)

    These current threads may help:

HM Bread cheaper ? and flour costs

    Bulk buying bread flour?

Bread flour vs ordinary plain flour?

    Bread with non bread flour.

I'll add your thread to the first link later to keep the suggestions together.

Tesco white bread flour is currently around 70p for a 1.5 Kg back, which makes 3-4 loaves. Also on 3-4-2 atm. I buy the small vacumn packs of Doves Easy Bake Yeast for Breadmakers which makes about 15 loaves, is about 90p and also on 3-4-2. My standard loaf is 75% white, 25% wholemeal, plus a tablespoon of sunflower oil, tespoon of sugar, teaspoon of salt, two teaspoons (all level) of yeast and water. Costs about 55p for a 700g loaf.

  • I don't think my homemade bread is cheaper than shop bought. I mostly use bread mixes as it's so darned convenient and fits in better with work but I do make the real thing from scratch when I have more time.

However, it's a hell of a lot cheaper than popping to the shop when I only need bread... ;)

Bread flour - Asda or Tesco, 68p for 1.5 kg, makes 3 large loaves
Yeast - Waitrose, Doves Farm Yeast 99p (one packet will do for loadsa batches)
Salt - fraction of a penny for a tsp
Water - fraction of a penny for pint and a half
15 minutes of elbow grease - free
25 minutes of oven at 220 fan - 9.16p according to my electricity monitor

My maths sucks, but I make it about 85p, tops, including the leccy, for 3 loaves. That's...um, where's the calculator...28.3p per loaf ? Asda SmartPrice cheapest cotton wool cut is about 50p, and even on whoopsie in my local Asda never less than about 40. If I found bread for 10p a loaf on whoopsie as some people seem to, well, yeah, I'd think twice. As it is, it's a no-brainer - home made IS cheaper.

Kittie recommended Shipton Mill to me for a sack of flour and it is very good. Also Doves do flour which is also nice.

  • I was buying mine in Sains as to far to go anywhere else but at £1.24 1.5kg was not cheap but still cheaper than buying a decent loaf but at moment can buy my bread flour from sons work as they deliver all baking items to caterers and places that sell their own baked goods, so white bread flour costing me £5 for 16Kg, Wholemeal £6 for 16Kg. He has been there a year and only now they told him he could buy from them. They are only a small family firm so hoping they keep going and son stays in work and I can continue to buy my cheap flour.

Can I ask does anyone know if you can freeze dried yeast as firm sells it only in 2kg bags and it has to be used within two months so a bit to big for me to get through in that time?

  • I bought 6 bags of the Hovis strong flour from Tesco a few weeks ago when their baking things were 3 for 2 and also for some reason the flour was also only about 34p.

I prepare bags of the dry ingredients so that I just need to through it in with the water and oil and yeast - does anyone know if I could add the yeast to my dry mixture and store like that (only talking about a week or 2)?

Just a word of caution, don't buy any bags of flour that have been opened & resealed! I bought the last bag of flour in the CoOp a while ago, that had been resealed, & ended up bringing a mouse into my flat as well...As the day after I bought it when I went to use it,the cupboard where I put it until I needed it,was covered in flour & the mouse had ate thru the bag to get out!! Took me (not Daisy cat..ME!) ages to catch the little !!!!!! & set him free in the back yard....

I usually make 70% wholemeal and get the white flour from Lidl or Asda, and the wholemeal from Asda. But when Tesco had 3 for 2 the other week i stocked up. I've been using Doves Farm yeast in a little tub from Tesco but they haven't had it for a while so last time got a green tub of Allinsons, it says enough for 14 loaves.
