It is much nicer, but it's a lot more filling so I find we don't eat more of it. We go through a loaf a day (sometimes more if everyone is at home), but on the odd occasion I've had to buy bread we've used a loaf a day too, but only because it doesn't fill you up!0 -
When tesco bread flour is 68p a bag, using the allinsons yeast (small tin, makes over 30 loaves for about 70p) making 4 loaves costs about 30p each, when the flour is £1 a bag it is more like 38p a loaf - so much cheaper, nicer and healthier than bought!Aiming to be debt & mortgage free by November 2018!0

We sometimes set our breadmaker on timer to bake a loaf overnight when we're on the cheaper electricity tariff (for us, that's 2.00-8.00a.m), so that probably makes it a bit cheaper over the course of a year.2025's challenges: 1) To fill our 10 Savings Pots to their healthiest level ever

The price of Tesco flour seems to be up and down like a wh*re's drawers!!! Today it was back down to 71p, last week it was over a pound, it's been as low as 52p and up to £1.34!0

I have a question regarding the tin of yeast, the dried one. I usually use the little packets and always thought you needed to make the dried yeast up. It is pretty expensive buying the small packets so can anyone advise on how I should use the tinned yeast please?0

just shove a tablespoon in. yeast itself multiplies so if you only put a bit in the mix takes longer to rise. can be useful if you want to go out.0

If you're baking by hand then dissolve the yeast in the warm water that you'd be using anyway. The tin probably then recommends that you leave it to stand for 15 minutes, but that probably isn't necessary.
Just to clear up any possible confusion, the sachets definitely do not require this treatment.0 -

Neither does the Doves Farm yeast!
I've just worked out the calorie content of a homemade loaf. I get 10 slices and 2 thin crusts, so I've worked it out at 11 slices a loaf. They are 152 calories each :eek::eek: (and I don't add oil or sugar to my bread either)0 -
I usually use fresh yeast (free from Asda Bakery) but I do the knead and prove bit in the bread maker as it does a better job than my kneading efforts - must have weak wrists:rotfl:
I put the yeast in the water with the sugar then put the flour and oil on top with the salt on top of that, then set the BM to dough - don't even bother to froth the yeast - and it turns out lovely.
I prefer my bread baked in the oven, and use half Lidl white and half chapati flour that I get from costco in 10kg bags - the last one cost me about £3.80, but I bought 2 so have been using it ages as only use 1/2lb at a time, so it might have gone up.0
