Gas Bill in ex-house mates name. Am I liable

Legal and Fair honest and decent are not the same.
The onus would be on the person who's name the bill is in to prove beyond doubt in court that you had an agreement to pay the Gas bill, or part off, in the absence of a written agreement this would be difficult to prove.
My gut feeling is the case would a frivolous action and fail.
Now the Morals:
Work out how much they owe you, take this away from your share of the Gas bill, write to show your maths and pay up.
Anyone else in a similar situation. draw up a written contract to state that each tenant hold equal responsibility for the amenities charges, those who wont sign it, sling them out.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Sorry don't agree with the 'prove beyond doubt' statement.
This is a civil court, not a criminal court! and the court will make a judgement after presentation of the evidence. In civil law a verbal agreement carries weight.
I have no written agreement with my milkman. If I decide not to pay him for the milk he has delivered, he can take me to the small claims court.0 -
Did your friends not turn the radiators off then? I lived in a 4 bed house with "friends" once, however if someone was away for a month or two and pro-rated the energy bills accordingly.
I think at the very minimum the bills need to be less for the girl who moved out, maybe charge her half of her third of the bills or something similar.
What the girl did wasn't nice, but that doesn't mean its right to overcharge her!
If it a 4 bed flat with only 3 housemates, why couldn't the friend move in anyway?
I suspect there is a lot more this than you have said.
There isn't a lot more to be honest. Installed a lock on her door so no one could get in, left her windows open so the thermostat would make sure the temperature was constantly up. I know this after looking out of the other bedrooms window noticing it was open climbing along the balcony through her window and turning the radiators down and lamps off. Took two months for my friend to realize the window and then I being the only one not afraid of heights had to do the deed.
She put the lock on so no one could move in till her tenancy was up, which obviously is fair if it's her tenancy but why move out and refuse to hand in your notice? She is a very strange girl...
So she should be liable for a third of the bills as it was a malicious attempt that succeeded in raising the bills for that period by a large amountMoney money money.
