Gas Bill in ex-house mates name. Am I liable

You have already had the answer to that question. See post #2.
Do you have it in writing that he has agreed to pay for your share of the bill? I thought not.
(The risk he took was that he would have the hassle of having to go to court to recover the money if you were obstrepious. There is no risk that you are not liable for your share.)0 -
He did not agree in writing that he would pay for my share, nor did we agree in writing I would pay.0

Unless your tenancy agreement explicitly states that the 'rent' is inclusive of all bills or you have explicit written agreement from your housemate that you do not need to pay for utility bills then, yes, any court will find you liable for your fair share of all bills0 -

Let us go through this slowly!
1. As far as the Utility company are concerned your housemate is liable for the bill - and you are not.
2. The only way he can get money from you is by taking you to court.
3. The court decides(not you decide!) if he has a valid claim against you after hearing what you both have to say(you are under oath.)
4. Now when it comes to opinion, several of us on here believe the court would decide that you would be liable to pay a share of that bill.0
