Hey I forgot to mention something really important. I thought the RJ45 port might be broken but that would not make sense because all the usb port etc around it work fine.
So I used a usb to ethernet cable adapter. It detects the adapter but not the cable. Does this isolate the problem to either the cable or the router being the source of the problem?0 -
Possibly, although it's not clear exactly what you mean. TheRJ45 physical socket could be broken without the USBsw around it being affected as they are soldered to different controllers on the motherboard.
If you have a laptop or another PC you could try a direct ad-hoc ethernet cable between it and your faulty PC (missing out the router altogether. Once connecteed to each other run ipconfig on the faulty pc again and see if the connection is detected.604!0 -

Tested both cables. PC recognised both ethernet cables and registered an unidentified network. So that means the port is not broken and neither are the cables, so it must be the router?0 -
Yes - your PC ethernet is fine.
How are you connecting to the internet to post here?604!0 -
Laptop.
I used this laptop to test the ethernet cables.
It is wirelessly connected to the router.0 -
That means it's just the ethernet ports on your router that are bust. You could either get a new router or use a wireless card/dongle in your pc to connect to it wirelessly like your laptop.604!0

I guess. Decisions... decisions. I guess ill just buy a wireless dongle. Any sugesstions for a good dongle that works with windows7?0

Is your router configured to only allow certain mac addresses access?
If you have sent it back and they changed the mobo then it will have a different mac address.0
