Miguel Barclay is famous for his meals for under £1 and he's produced some very tasty ones too!

I think the name of this thread should be changed as it's now 10 years out of date. Or at least start a new thread as feeding two people for 50p isn't very realistic.

Oh is this the chef who was featured on "This morning" the other day? The meal he made looked very nice. Chicken thigh curry, I think. :)
I am a bit surprised the shepherd's pie recipe has no form of gravy in it though. Especially as it would still be well under a pound each?

I was impressed with the £1 meals website, until I realised it is actually £1 per serving! So not much cheaper than you can make from your own imagination anyway.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

If I was to make the same for eight people I would use (going by the
recommended serving portions from NHS etc)

100g dry pasta per portion 40p (from two 25p packets)

Is 100g dry pasta the recommended portion size? I thought it was 50-75g (side/main)?

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

I looked it up to check, and it varied between 85g and 100g.
I picked 100g because I think you probably need more if its on its own with cheese. (less if its with bolognaise and salad etc)

I think it shows that Kimplus's recipe is suitable even for the largest of appetites, and the low cost leaves a bit of room to add or change ingredients. :)

If using pasta for me I do 50g but if it is for my son (6ft tall slim as a reed and permanently hungry!!!) I use 75g. I also think that adding loads of veg to anything makes it cheaper - so in a 'pasta' bake there will always be some extra veg - finely diced carrot or peppers (grow my own in pots on window sills) or spinach that has gone to floppy yo be used for salads, for example.
Other examples include - grated parsnip/carrot/swede into 'beefburgers'; chiile con carne with added peppers and mushrooms; spag bol with carrot (saves adding toomuch sugar to sweeten the often acidic canned tomatoes too); shepheard's pie with carrot or swede finely diced in. All of these eke out the meat side of ingredients.

Home made flatbreads (recipies on Hugh FW or Jamie O's sites are good) are a cheap way to make food stretch - make chiiladas (mexican - using green lentils) or falafel (Arabic and that area of the world - using chick peas) to fill them with salad or use left over spag bol and or chilli!
Gotta be less than 50p a portion!
