Many of previous posts mention bacon.
This is not cheap, but if you cast your eyes down when standing at the bacon display, you will often find "cooking bacon" about £1.20 a pack.
You can sometimes find a large bacon chop in the pack. Best value can be to put the pack of bits in a processor and add bread crumbs and egg mix well then made into burgher (not too thick).
Farmfoods do packs of 5/6 rashers of bacon (frozen) for £1 and, because it's very lean, you get more meat for your money than the often fatty cooking bacon. Defrost in the fridge and you can separate the rashers to use over a couple of days if necessary. Just don't re-freeze unless cooked in something.“I want to be a glow worm, A glow worm's never glum'Coz how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?" ~ Dr A. I love this thread!
Just realised I've got 100 pounds to feed me, the hubby and kid until 25th October :S
Never had that little to spend on food shopping before so could do with all the ideas I can get!!! We have to do dinners and 2 packed lunches everyday with that amount.
Started a meal plan, first port of call is to use up the two packets of turkey mince i have in the fridge so there's a turkey chili on in the slow cooker at the moment. And i'll do a big batch of spaghetti bolognese for dinner tomorrow and for a packed lunch for next week.
I'm a clean eater and we eat a lot of wheat and gluten free foods as they irritate my IBS so it's gotta be healthy stuff too.
I've taken down a few of these ideas - even though the prices are out of date they are still handy.

Last night I cooked BBC Good Foods root vegetable and lentil casserole. Everyone loved it (including DD) and it's clean and probably under 50p pp.0 -
Had stew and couscous for lunch - in each portion the following costs apply: 7p for the cous cous (50g of a 500g 70p bag), 8.5p for 1/4 tin tomatoes, 6p for 1/4 tin baked beans (sauce rinsed off), 2p for 1/4 carrot, sprinkling of italian herbs, couple of free pepper sachets from a cafe, 1/4 of an onion (5p?). About 30p a portion (made 4 portions in total) and really filling and warming, plus includes veg, protein and carbs. My debt free diary | Post Office loan: £2131 1429.38 | Barclaycard: £4429 1988.12 | Paypal Credit £322.71 574.91 | Monzo Flex £169.03 |
Total £4151.44 | £2900.30 of £7051.74 paid off since diary started October 2024.0 -
