Doesn't the cheese on its own cost most of the £1?0 -

I agree grated cheese goes so much further I try to buy the strongest I can as well, as the stronger the more flavour so ergo you don't need so much0

No if I just use a sprinkle of cheese on top.
You must be a very restrained family.
If I was to make the same for eight people I would use (going by the
recommended serving portions from NHS etc)
100g dry pasta per portion 40p (from two 25p packets)
2 cans tomatoes= 62p
25g cheese per person, so 1.20 for a 200g block. (the recommended serving is actually 30g but its easier to add up with 25.:o)
So not including the herbs, mine would come to £2.22. Under 28p per person, which is really good, I think. Especially as most people would like it.0 -
My go-to cheapy meal especially in winter would be a spicy lentil dahl and chapattis. Red lentils, fresh ginger, plenty of garlic and onion etc. Wholemeal flour chapattis. Really healthy, veggie, vegan and very cheap. Bound to come in under 50p when you have the bits already in and do the sums0

Miguel Barclay is famous for his meals for under £1 and he's produced some very tasty ones too!
I think the name of this thread should be changed as it's now 10 years out of date. Or at least start a new thread as feeding two people for 50p isn't very realistic.0 -
