Is this 50 per portion or 50p for the whole lot? Here's a weeks worth of recipes for 50p or less per head. Prices taken from Sainsburys website so probably cheaper at another supermarket!

Half a pound of mince, fried with a large onion, tip in a tin of baked beans, add some curry paste or curry powder if desired, serve with mashed spuds, serve with carrots, feeds four. Freeze the other half pound from the packet, and use it next week.

    Mince 75p
    Onion 16p
Beans 17p ( can get them much cheaper!)
    Potatoes 30p
    Carrots 34p
Curry powder/paste - tablespoonful from cupboard.

£1.72 for 4 people - so dinner is the same again tomorrow or the next day, just reheated!

Pick out larger spuds for baking 30p
    Tin tuna 35p
    marge/butter
one eightth of a cucumber 16p
    Quarter of lettuce 11p

    92p for 2

one eightth of a cucumber 16p
    Quarter of lettuce 11p
    4 eggs 36p
    Potato 15p
    Onion 16p

Spanish style omelet with salad - 0.94p for 2

Beans 17p (can get them much cheaper)
    Bread 15p
    2 eggs 18p
    Quarter of lettuce 11p
    Onion 15p

Fry onion, add to baked beans, serve on toast with fried egg on top and a little salad - 76p for 2

    4 sausages 25p
    1 onion 15p
    Gravy from store cupboard
    Potatoes 30p

Sausage with onion gravy and mash - fry onions until they are caramelising, then make the gravy. Grill sausages or cook them in the oven in the gravy with a lid on.
    70p for two portions

    Tin tomatoes 15p
    4 sausages 25p
    wholewheat pasta 15p
    Herbs etc from store cupboard
    onion 15p
    Quarter lettuce, shredded 11p

Pasta sauce with sausage, fry sausage, slice thinly and add to tinned tomatoes with herbs etc.

    81p for two

£5.85 for 7 days of decent food for 2 people.

If you have to buy the gravy powder that's another 50p, but you can use it for the next week too...

    This thread is a lifesaver.

Things are going to be tight in our household for the next month or two due to a move between a temporary job to being made permanent (I hope - fingers crossed)

On the subject of meat, our local butcher does 3 trays of meat for £5 which I think is a really good deal.

  • Try adding some curry powder when you're frying the onions for the Parsnip and Apple soup. Really good ;)

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker Savvy Shopper!
I always put a bit of curry powder in my carrot soup, just bought a bag of carrots from Lidl for 29p so will make some and freeze and use my new super duper stick blender, so much easier! :)

Great soup idea. Thinking of trying this one early in the new year.
  • Just found this thread, and although I'm debt free... I want to reduce my food bill!

Here's a really good simple winter soup... takes a bit of time to cook the lentils (based on a dhal recipe), but can be adapted to whatever veg is available.

    Beerhunters Winter Soup
    (serves 2)

    1 medium onion
    3 gloves of garlic
    2tsp of veg oil
    4 slices of bacon (optional)
    125g of red lentils
    750ml of water
    1tsp of turmeric
    2 medium peeled potato's
    1 carrot
    1 courgette
(or what every left over veg you have)

    1) Wiz the onion and garlic in a blender until smooth.

    2) Chop up the bacon

    3) In a saucepan, add the 2tsp of oil a and fry the garlic/onion paste
and bacon for a few minutes.

    4) Add 125g of red lentils and turmeric, and fry for a couple more
    minutes.

    5) Season with a touch of salt and a good twist of pepper.

    6) Add 750ml of boiling water, and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring
occasionally until the lentils break down (or use a whizzy thing to help it on its way).

    7) Chop the potato, carrot and courgette into a medium dice.

    8) Add veg to pot (add the veg that will take longest to cook first), and simmer for about 15 minutes, or until you can squeeze a potato piece between the fingers and it falls apart.

    9) Serve with some crusty bread to mop it up!
