  • Another idea which I've done in the past, which is ideal after the sunday beef roast dinner when you have some fatty bits left over.

    1) Turn the oven on to max.

    2) Make a yorkshire pudding batter (I use 2 heaped tbl spoons of flour, 1 egg, 150ml of milk and salt/pepper.. enough for 1 large portion or two normal portions)

    3) Chop up the left over fatty bits of beef, and place in a baking tin and place in oven.

    4) When the fat has melted and sizzling, pour in the batter mix.

    5) Cook until golden brown.

    6) Serve with cooked veg and gravy.
  • Sounds yummy! May give this a go tomorow

You then have to add on milk, tea, coffee, drinks, cereal, bread, sugar. If you have kids you cant deny them odd biscuit after school. Then petfood. It soon adds up.
It isnt dinners that are so expensive just everything inbetween.School holidays are a killer trying to feed hungry kids.My milk bill is just over a pound everyday with 4 kids.I cant and wont cut that back.We could easily use more.Thats £7 alone.

Cheapest milk around for us is Farmfoods, 4 litres for £1.60. Have you got one nearby. You could also use dried milk for cooking, and save proper milk for drinking and cereal etc.

I fed my family of four v cheaply, easily and yummily tonight. Here follows the recipe!

Veggie sausage and butter bean bake

    Dash of oil
    Garlic clove
    Large onion
    Tin of tomatoes
    Tin of butter beans
4 cooked veggie sausages ( oh go on, non- veggie if you're so inclined!)grated cheese topping (optional)
    Dash of herbs

    1) Chop onion and garlic and fry lightly in oil
    2) Put tomatoes and butter beans in a baking dish.
    3) Add chopped up sausages
    4) Add onions and garlic and mix together.
    5) Add herbs and cheese topping if desired
    6) Bake uncovered in oven at 180 degrees for 20-30 mins and enjoy!

BTW With one hour to go, a Happy New Year to you all!
  • Having read the thread, I'm surprised there's no mention of dumplings!

Some cheap cuts of meat braised with dumplings is fantastic... however I've never been able to produce dumplings like those in eastern europe.

Googling I've found http://e.schrabal.home.att.net/, which has recipes for various Bohemian dumplings, which I'm definitely going to try out and report back on!

Id like to have a go at making dumplings too. My memories of them are being served them by my mum and me not liking them but that was a good few years ago now
  • Have never liked dumplings. I think they are an acquired taste.

I don't like suet dumplings, but I love these courgette ones at the bottom of this page:

You have to cook them slowly and not overcook them though, as they could break up. They have a gorgeous flavour though, and are fat-free as an added bonus.

Anyone ever tried this simple one..?

    Sardine Mash Bake:

1 tin sardines in tomato sauce

    Mashed Potato

    A little grated cheddar

You can guess the method! Incorporate the sardines into the mash fairly coarsely, Cheese on top. 10 mins in a hot oven. Tasty, cheap... and fairly healthy.
