Clydesdale Bank - refuse to perform BACS?

Went into my local Clydesdale Bank branch today to transfer £3,000 to my Nationwide Flexaccount from my Clydesdale Bank current account, only to be told that the only way I could get the money there is by CHAPS or bankers draft, costing £24 and £15 respectively!
I thought all banks could transfer money to other institutions for you via BACS?
They've now lost a customer, going to withdraw my balance and close the account.

Have you got internet banking?
If so, you can BACS transfer it using the service. Avoiding the charge.0 -
Nope, no internet banking and I can't be bothered setting it up.
Account being closed ASAP.0 -
Might be for the best0

Why not issue a cheque from your Clydesdale acount and send it to the Nationwide or is the price of a stamp too costly as well?0

I don't have a cheque book for my Clydesdale account.
And by that comment are you saying it's acceptable for them to only transfer money by CHAPS at a cost of £24 when the vast majority of banks will send a BACS transfer for free?
If you are then I can only assume you are a major shareholder/ have some other kind of interest in them.0 -
Hmm Abbey won't do a BACS transfer to another bank either, nor will my branch of Barclays-I don't know of any bank that will actually do it in a branch, but all will do it online.Debts Jan 2014 £20,108.34

No banks/building societies do it in the branch, you can only do BACS via telephone or internet banking. Some will also let you do them via the ATM, if you set up the mandates in advance.
If your going to use the branch, why not phone up a day or two before, and ask for the cash to be made available in the branch and take it to Nationwide.
I generally find this is the quickest way for important amounts of cash, rather than BACS or a cheque.
I'm certainly not a big fan of banks (National Australia or otherwise), but i can see their point for charging for doing things that you could do yourself via the internet or phone banking. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I didnt know that actually, assumed I could perform a BACS transfer over the counter just like I can online with Bank of Scotland/Nationwide. Not got online/telephone banking with Clydesdale and not setting it up now.
Still going to close the account, sick of them anyway. Stupid opening hours and awful interest rates.0 -

3 Free ways (excluding postage costs)
You say the account is a current so ask for a cheque book and issue one,
If you have telephone banking set it up as a bill payment or swallow your pride and register for internet banking and set it up this way.
In fact I've just thought of a fourth in that you could withdraw the money at the Clydesdale and deposit it straight back if you have a pre printed Nationwide Bank Giro Credit slip with your account details.0 -
Set up a standing order/ bill payment - then cancel after the first payment has gone - this will be sent by BACS. Will take 3 working days to reach bank, whereas CHAPS is same day0
