nice to see that it's Microsoft-free, but it's a pretty low-spec processor..
Intel Atom N455... (passmark CPU rating: 318)

Toshiba Satellite C660-119 15.6" - £300
Celeron T3500 also worthless? No idea..
passmark CPU rating for the T3500: 1440

Dual-core Intel® Pentium® P6200 processor any good?
In comparison to the Toshiba above, which is best?
passmark CPU rating for the P6200: 1649

Not a huge amount to choose between those two processors..
But £350 should get you a laptop with an Intel i3..0 -
The Q330 has an Intel i3 350m (passmark rating: 2048)
The SF310 has an Intel i5 580m (passmark rating: 2872)
I was sure the q330 was in the top range and the other in the midrange. I will take another look..
In any case, given then rest of the specs don't see the extra money is justified and for what I need I think q330 is better value for money.0 -
It seems good quality. The diff in tech spec I don't think is enough to make too much difference.
Of the two, I'd have the acer - a lot less money.
You'd probably find that side by side, the size diff is not that amazing.
You might be right. Range in store is so small so hard to find exact models to compare. I guess it would still be good to reevaluate my perception of the size difference. If I remember correcty other than macs, they only had one advent that size in my local currys
Any general consensus about samsung as a laptop brand though?0 -

Sure. The Q330 is £110 less. In fact, without Windows, you can find it for £390.0 -

Toshiba is looking favourable.
Have you thought about Lenovo?
I will try. I think samsung is quite sleek, but have to see the physical machine for sure. Some acers are quite good looking0 -
With ~£350 to spend, I wouldn't settle for less than a Core i3..
What about this for £336... An Asus with an i3 330m (passmark CPU rating.. 1964)

For the tech savvy I know this is a bonus, for the layman- it would be inopperable!
Any idea about samsung as laptop brand? In comparison to say the sonys I mentioned before, or a similar priced toshiba?0 -

no idea about samsungs.. don't even recall seeing one in the flesh.. although i would say that they are probably just rebadges any way.. there are just a handful of manufacturers of laptops in the world.. all in the far east..
edit: does sony even make its own laptops?0 -

For a 15.6", £350 would be my max and you are right, I think I can get quite a lot for that and the asus u linked to looks quite good.
I dont mind spending a little extra for a smaller screen however, and it's all relative, how much more I would be happy to pay..
Samsung q330 looks good to me, but don't know much about the brand as a laptop. The sonys also look good, but I have heard they are useless unless very top end and expensive..0
