So the table fitted in the car, are you saying you couldn't fold the cardboard box to fit in with it? Surely this would be possible?

I think the fact you state you WILL buy a cover for it if it is replaced says it all - you should have bought a cover with it.

At the same time - Asda's reply wasn't what I would have expected, it seems very defensively put - have you asked them in a civil way or have you thrown terms and stats etc at them?

It does seem like you're pinning the blame on Asda for taking away the box which you could have folded and kept or could have taken it home in the box if you had measured and checked it would fit in the car before buying.

The fact you bought it and still took it even after finding out it didn't fit in your car is not Asda's fault - indeed, if I had a table to construct and the box wouldn't fit I certainly would have ensured that I got the instructions out of the box before they took it for you - so the fact they are missing is your fault, not Asda's.

Seems like Asda are having this pinned on them unfairly - yes the product may have an issue with rust, but 90% of your original complaint is of your own making and maybe Asda should have just left you to it when you walked away from the tills...

Sorry, but the only part of your complaint which is valid is the rust (where clearly sufficient weatherproofing of the product was not completed effectively) - the rest is all on you I am afraid...

...your comparing apples and oranges with pears and bananas..the table does what it's meant to do...rust or not. It's a table and as it works as a table is fit for purpose.
But again, by that logic so is a rusting car.

You stated that iron rusting is a 'feature of the material' and not a fault, I'm wondering if you hold the same viewpoint on all painted metals that are intended for use outdoors.

A painted metal table rusting after a few weeks is a 'feature of the material' for example but a car rusting after a few weeks is presumably not a 'feature of the material' and you would consider that a fault?

Would you consider a painted wrought-iron garden gate that rusts after a month a 'feature of the material'?

I'm genuinely interested at what point you feel the line is drawn between a faulty product and the aforementioned 'feature of the material'. :)

Not true though is it - a car with sufficient rust will fail an MOT and thus not be fit for purpose.

The table works as a table at the moment , unless the rust is so bad that thing collapses when you put any weight on it, it still works as a table and is thus fit for purpose.

All that being said, I'd still be after a refund as well, but I'd also have collapsed the box and taken it with me so what do I know!

What if you bought a TV with a dodgy scart socket, since it still allows you to watch television programmes would that be acceptable?

No, because it is not fully functioning. A car with enough rust to fail an MOT is not fully functioning, a table with rust is still a table and still has full functionality.

It still doesn't change the fact that I would expect a refund, you just can't argue it based on it not being fit for purpose when it clearly is.

OP did you not think to buy a cover at the time of purchase as it would have been something i would have bought at the time to protect the set from the elements,

It was pretty much an impulse buy, therfore no time to measure the car, plus i have a reasonable size car so wouldnt have thought it was an issue.
Asda took the box away, with no option for me to fold it.
WIth regards to buying the table cover, i wasnt aware it needed one, its the first garden furniture ive ever bought, and had no idea that an outdoor (it rains outdoors right?), painted, table would need waterproofing!

Im sorry, but would you be happy if you were in my situation?
Yes it does still function as a table you are correct, but its defective.
Thats like saying a car tire with a slow puncture still functions as a tire!

Not a great deal judging by what I've heard from you so far.

Returning to the car analogy for a moment, you would presumably agree that a brand new car a few weeks out of the showroom that developed a rust problem would be faulty?

No one is saying the table has rusted to the point where it can no longer be used as a table, just as I'm not saying the aforementioned car had rusted to the point where it would fail an MOT.

Please answer my question regarding a brand new car beginning to just being faulty or not.
