The firm could, almost certainly, have taken the proper steps and lawfully terminated the OP's contract.

I agree with your post, but having led a public sector team with a prediliction for taking this p*ss around A/L, sick leave and "snow" leave (and by that you can read staying in bed with your partner), I have little sympathy with people that are all take and no give. I would have certainly taken this through the correct procedure, this kind of oversight is just inefficient and is the only view I share with this govt.

Quite true and only the OP will be able to tell us whether or not when he went on the sick 3 years ago whether it was with a good relationship or not, if it was a bad ending to the effective end of the relationship then the OP has nothing to lose.

I had and still have a very good relationship with work

I can't blame you for going for the money but please please just be aware that it could sour relationships (it on the other hand may not).

Is it a large company? If so then it is more likely HR will give a boring reference, if you know someone in the company without stirring up interest in you then it might be worth getting them to enquire.
The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!

<snip>Always the same people too, I don't think they can work as they seem to be on here sprouting their nonsense 24/7. At least I have an excuse as I'm on maternity leave, and am waiting for twins to be born :D

I look forward to you putting your money where your mouth is and naming these people.

Because you work for either Barclays or RBS, and you are a good example of their organisational skills!

    P.S. - You mean 50 countries, not "150 countrys".
