If you're feeling energetic you could climb Arthur's Seat. If you're feeling less energetic you could just stick to Calton Hill which also offers good views.
Be sure to explore some of the Closes off the Royal Mile. I love all the nooks and crannies in the Old Town.
It's a long time since I went to the Castle but if they still do the free guided tours, they're worth joining.0 -
i love the old town too.0

We did an open top bus tour...they do (or at least did 4 years ago) a full 24hr ticket hop-on-hop-off and if you didn't get started til say 11 in the morning you had til 11 next morning before the ticket ran out. Was a great way to get the history and see ideas of places to visit
We also loved Camera Obscura, close by the castle
Castle was great and we spent close on 5 hours going round it all - it's part traditional castle, part museum. Not that cheap but if you stay that long it does feel worth it0 -
Im also going for 3 days in June. Decided to buy the edinburgh pass plus the bus tour as that will be hop off and on at most of the places the pass covers. It also covers airport pick up and return bus.

If you go to the castle ( which I liked, ) buy the tickets in advanced . The line for tickets on the day can take the best part of an hour!!!!! ( and this was in April, with all ticket booths working)
The free guide, every 20 mins is magic. Hang around just past the first door.0
