Sick of being 'fleeced' by the private rental sector.

Unless you were expecting to win the lottery whilst on your trip of a lifetime funded by the sale of your home, what did you expect to live in when you returned?!

Go live in a tent on a camp site for a couple of years whilst you save up another deposit!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I want an alternative to renting a house.

I travelled with my OH in Oz for a year in a campervan and had the best sleep of my life!

I pay £700 for a rented house in the private sector and this does not make me happy, I will invariably always have neighbours (banging doors, music & the like) that will keep me awake.

The problem is I have a 2 year old daughter now and the situation is somewhat different.

    UK house situation sucks!

In what way are you being fleeced, your post doesn't make this clear.
    It's someone else's fault.

One of the regulars here was going to go off in a camper van. Is it Pastures New?
I wanted (still want) to, but don't feel my personal qualities are up to the challenge (aka: I'm a right wuss).

And the cost of camper vans (that would have to be immaculate due to my OCD) was prohibitive.

So .... it's out there as an idea, but I'd need somebody else to 'take responsibility' and make decisions. I couldn't do it alone.

I disagree. I didn't do things in quite as much style as the OP but flew to OZ, bought a station wagon, drove around for 4 months, sold it, flew to India, travelled around by train and bus for another 6 months then came home via Nepal. All this came to no more than 3 grand. That's p*ssing in the ocean when it comes to house deposits.

Next thing we know you'll be moaning that young uns spend too much money on ipods or going out or buying clothes blah blah blah
Yeah, all very nice, but 'proper grown ups' like a bit of comfort and luxury - fresh hot baths, solid walls, bit of safety/security going on. Ability to receive private post.

    :)

You're not bemoaning property - you're feeling trapped in the life you made and are reminiscing.

Don't ever regret selling my house, the very reason I sold was to escape the overcrowded streets, noisy neighbours etc....

What I am aspiring to is a more suitable way of living for my personality that's all, I appreciate quieter places, nature & freedom, all without paying through the nose for it!

All I really want is ideas/experiences from those who have tried alternative ways of living.

Lot of negative comments here folks.

You post with a pretty evocative and negative title where you are "sick of being fleeced", add in another negative like "UK house situation sucks" and you say we're the nagative ones?

If you spent more of your energy looking for a more appropriate propertty, and less whinging on an online forum, you may have more luck getting what you want.

Do you speak another language? Would you be willing to learn? Sounds like living abroad might suit you better... more laid back, cheaper, could buy in the middle of nowhere. Maybe a French farmhouse on the edge of a quiet village, or mainland Spain. Wouldn't hurt to have a little browse on the net.

A close friend's sister has upped sticks and moved to France (she's got 3 kids) and seems to be settling in well. Far more friends than she had here, and is loving the open space. She was never suited to England-living.

Eh? Receive private post? Whilst on holiday?! Safety/security? Trapped? I'm not sure what you're talking about.

All I'm doing is questioning the assumption that you're not allowed to have a holiday if you're saving for a house. I happily managed both.
