Sick of being 'fleeced' by the private rental sector.

I want an alternative to renting a house.

I travelled with my OH in Oz for a year in a campervan and had the best sleep of my life!

I pay £700 for a rented house in the private sector and this does not make me happy, I will invariably always have neighbours (banging doors, music & the like) that will keep me awake.

The problem is I have a 2 year old daughter now and the situation is somewhat different.

UK house situation sucks!

Buy a house in the middle of no-where?
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

One of the regulars here was going to go off in a camper van. Is it Pastures New?

If you'd saved the costs of travelling & OZ & camper van for a year, would you be any closer to having enough saved for deposit to buy your own place??

Bit of a radical thought I accept - but, did wonder...

    Cheers!

I disagree. I didn't do things in quite as much style as the OP but flew to OZ, bought a station wagon, drove around for 4 months, sold it, flew to India, travelled around by train and bus for another 6 months then came home via Nepal. All this came to no more than 3 grand. That's p*ssing in the ocean when it comes to house deposits.

Next thing we know you'll be moaning that young uns spend too much money on ipods or going out or buying clothes blah blah blah

I think you'll find it was the OP that was actually moaning... theartfullodger simply posed an entirely reasonable question. :D

I really fail to understand the comparison between youthful swanning around in a foriegn country and 'settling down' in the UK.

If you prefer one to the other, then continue to live that way. If you can't/don't want to, then find a new way to live and adapt to it.

Neighbour noise coming through the walls is nothing to do with renting. You need a detached house to deal with that, whether you rent it or buy it is irrelevant. ;)
