Sick of being 'fleeced' by the private rental sector.

    Because there is a shortage of housing in the UK, combined with a rising population, increasing life expectancy, and the fact that we create 250% more households each year than we build houses.

    But close enough...:cool:
    People will always need a roof over thier head and the buying situation means no-one can afford to buy.

    An inevitable consequence of the mortgage famine is that less people will be able to buy to use as owner occupation. This pushes more people into rented, which worsens an already severe shortage and drives up the price of rent. Which then attracts investment capital to BTL, drives house prices up again, and ensures a "lost generation" of renters stuck with high rents and high house prices enriching their landlords instead of themselves.

    All blindingly obvious.....So I'll confess to being curious.

    Did absolutely none of this cross your mind during the decision making process to sell your house and p1ss the money away on a 2 year holiday???

    a friend of mine has just bought a field ( a small one), she has now put one of those log cabin things in and uses a gas tank and im not sure how she manages her water and electric, but she said planning permission was really easy as it can be removed. its lovley and means she has lots of open space around her and a huge garden. Also was sooooooooooooooo much cheeper than buying or building a house

    To the OP:

    Unfortunately there is no guarantee that either renting or buying will bring a quiet life - it depends on the neighbours to a large extent. I live in a beautiful area with fields, river and woods and very few people and yet my neighbours are not wholly desirable. They have parties with floodlights in the garden which go on until three in the morning. There is a riverboat which takes rowdy youth up the river and returns in the small hours when it delights in opening up the sound system to such decibels that the pop music could be generated in my bedroom. There is a police shooting range up the valley which pops off most days. So - it looks idyllic but certainly is not.
    On the other hand I lived in the middle of a village in France - in the main street and never suffered any such aggravation.
    I suppose that only very careful research into an area, its rents or buying possibilities and all the attendant needs you have would be necessary. I would say, however, that my experience of living in another country certainly taught me that in other cultures the right to a private quiet life, if that is what you want, is more possible.
    I hanker after a log cabin in the woods away from everybody but that is almost impossible in the UK.
