  • Hi there,

My husband and I got a knock on the door from this company, we were very suspicious at first and asked to call the company direct. After doing so we found out we were eligible for free, (child tax credits and income), so we signed for the grant. Although we still had our doubts, Macrow called us 2 weeks later to confirm we had a surveyor at our house and they then organised a fitting date. We have just had our insulation fitted (Macrow are the subcontractors for our energy supplier e-on) and it was free. Lets just hope it saves us some money this winter!!

Good, I'm pleased for you, and in particular for getting back to the group and confirming what happened to you, it helps us know who is good and who is bad, and it helps others reading thread's know that its worth the effort applying.

    Best to you Rory :D

  • Macrow Energy:

These people came and signed up my mother (back in August) and we are still waiting for them to come and fit the insulation. Not very happy at the moment as I have chased them up and they assured me that they would be in touch to arrange the fitting within the week (that was 4 weeks ago). I have chased them again today but keep getting a recorded message asking me to leave my contact details (this I have now done twice). I have also emailed them today, asking them to let me know what is going on. In the meantime, the contents of my poor old mum's loft are stored all over her house until they actually fit the stuff - not happy! If things change, I will let people know. My mum is with British Gas dual tarriff and is entitled to this stuff free because of her age and her income.
  • Update: After chasing for 4 weeks and emailing them a fortnight ago, they finally responded, giving me the name of the installation company - no apology for ignoring my messages and no explanation. I have gone directly to British Gas now and am doing this through them. The customer service from Macrow was so terrible and the phone was never answered. Mainly for this reason, I won't give them my business, nor can I recommend them. British Gas hadn't heard of them nor had they heard of the installation company they use (D&G Insulations).

There is absolutely no excuse for not returning a left message within 2-3 days or an email within a similar time frame (as opposed to the fortnight it took for them to finally respond to mine). There is also no excuse for leaving my mum waiting since late August for this initial contact. I have contacted D&G Insulations and cancelled the appointment and will only be dealing directly with the installer set-up by British Gas from now on.
  • I've had the same experience of Macrow Energy. In September two people knocked on my door saying due to my benefits I could get free cavity wall and loft insulation. They checked the loft and walls and said I'd hear soon but still not heard a sausage. Tried phoning but phone never answered. Just a recorded message to leave details. Had a look on website to look for contact details but just same number and an email address which has also not been responded to.

One of my neighbours, a pensioner, has had the same experience and is quite concerned.
The scheme for free installation is free for people in certain circumstances so will be looking into ways to this on my own without Macrow's involvement. Will not be dealing with them again
  • Almost all energy providers, and everyone on this island uses electricity can sort it for you. Almost all Local Authorities on this island can sort it for you. Almost all Housing Associations on this island can sort it for you, even supermarkets will do it on a freephone number.

I have gone for the company who are contracted for work from the local council. Seems safer to me.
  • Beginning to wonder if this is not a con. I also had visit and promise of free loft insulation, but now no contact. Do they get people to sign up and then claim the cost from wherever and not do the work? Is this the latest Big Fraud?
  • Just had some people from Macrow here. They asked if loft insulation had been done in last 5 years, said it probably needed re-doing to a higher standard, and that they could get the work done and paid for by my energy supplier.
They implied that they were government agents for this iniative, though they clearly represented a private firm, and said something vague but urgent about 3 days, implying but not stating that the offer would be withdrawn soon.
They may be a respectable firm doing honest business, but with sales tactics like this I can't trust them.
