Hi
I am at Mum's and she is having a loft conversion done. Someone form Macrow Energy has knocked on saying they can have the loft insulated for free as they have their gas from british gas. He said it was a utility grant and mentioned Miller Pattison?
She is tempted but is it ok? Anyone done this? The sales person is coming back at 7 for them to sign and go and go ahead.
Thanks

BG are offering free loft insulation or cavity wall insulation to all existing energy customers. They sometimes sub-contract the survey and insulation work out to third party companies.

If you are not 100% sure there is a free phone number on the following link that you could phone to check that everything is above board.

    http://www.britishgas.co.uk/energy-efficiency/free-insulation.html

I don`t know anything about Macrow energy and who or what they represent though.

These are a new company and seem to be offering free insulation and saying your gas supplier will pay for it. This is a sales ploy. A gas supplier may pay them for the work, but not necessarally the one they say. For example SWALEC (SSE) are my supplier and they do not deal with Macrow.Any work they offer for free just make sure they are an approved contractor and you get a written quotation so you don't end up paying for it. Or seek an alternative company of use your gas supplier.

I`m not sure about Macrow but Miller Patterson (sp) are definitely a subcontractor that BG use.

BG are now offering free cavity wall AND roof insulation if your are a homecare or energy customer. Give them a call and arrange it directly through them. It might be one or the other given that you only have your gas with them.

It depends on the area that the OP lives in as in some areas BG subcontract work out. It doesn`t matter what service the customer has with BG, it`s purely down to the area.

Hi guys, similiar situation to the OP but my parents helped to fill in the paperwork to allow them to set the ball rolling, from the counterfoil receipt the rep left, they seem to be eligible for a full grant for loft insulation (rep ticked 100% free grant, nothing else under payment details), from what i understand the rep had a look in the loft and mentioned the existing insulation is low, and should be 11" according to new guidelines etc. I don't know if this is correct as they received a warm front grant for a new boiler about 3 yrs ago which included loft insulation which i would have thought would still be ok.

has anyone had any previous dealings with Macrow Energy, there seemed to be a team going door-to-door from what my parents mentioned. Hopefully i can confirm everything first before their contractors turn-up would definitely like to make sure there are no t&c's regarding existing insulation, which will allow them to charge on a technicality.

    thanks in advance

I've just had a visit from them, and the opening line was something along the lines of 'this is a Final surveyor check for this road'. Alarm bells ringing. Why open with an misleading statement like that, unless you're looking to fleece the elderly / vulnerable?

    Cheerio.

    .

Indeed - I've heard there are people going door-door putting in natural wool insulation.
    That's right - they're fleecing the elderly.
