I had virgin media at my old place and I'm sure the socket was different & had virgin media written on the front with connection underneath for the cables this definitely doesn't have these. Surely that means it's an ADSL line.0

Yes sounds like it. So you don't have to be reconnected with Virgin (the most expensive telephony around). No free lunch, and no free laptop

Try power ethernet adapters. This uses the existing wiring to form a network between two points. Can be bought for around 40 squid and does the job.0

Powerline networking won't work though if the studio flat is on it's own CU.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Can't you just run a network cable from the router to your PC? Can be run outside if needed.0

It might be worth trying a bit harder with the WiFi before giving up.
I would consider a "wireless bridge" rather than built in WiFi on a laptop.
Ideally buy something like this:-
http://www.pulsat.com/products/Belkin-F5D7330-Wireless-G-Bridge-Gaming-Adapter.html
from a real shop just in case it has to go back because you can't get it to work.
You put it in a location where the WiFi is strong enough then use a network cable to the PC.
They are often used for games consoles but are fine for "normal" PCs.0 -
I've managed to get working again but the signal isn't very strong. I know my landlord has a Belkin Wireless G router so signal won't be very strong given the walls and everything. I was looking at those just don't know if there's anywhere near here that would stock them. I don't a dedicated PC shop near me; I'll have to look around I guess.0
