Two broadband providers in same house?

I moved into basement flat a couple of months ago and have been using my landlords wireless connection all was fine with sometimes dropping connection until a few weeks ago. After trying 3 different wireless adapters it won't connect to the network. I think I'm too far away to get a good connection, so planning on getting my connection sorted. I'm unsure of my options I have a phone socket but could I have a separate provider at same address? Or would I be limited to mobile broadband? Any help would be appreciated as I'm doing an IT course and need a reliable connection.

You can have as many providers as you like at one property, but each will need their own BT line in order to have ADSL broadband. This will require a line rental contract.
You may have a BT socket on it's own line (i.e. not on your landlord's), but unless the line is still active then you will be charged for a reconnection.

  • That was what I figured would I need to phone BT first? Or would that be done by broadband provider?

You have to have an active line before you can have ADSL, so you'll have to phone BT and sort that yourself.

You don't have to be reconnected by BT, you can use any provider you wish (possibly including your preferred broadband supplier) who offers this service.

Were you connecting with the landlords permission/knowledge? i.e. has the landlord changed any settings on the router to stop you connecting?
Can you connect at all if you move your computer closer?
  • Yeah said I could use connection when I moved in. It's only studio flat so can't really PC because of the layout. He's rebooted for me before but i think I just might be too far away to get a decent connection. He said the phone line was used did have a separate number assigned to it so I would need to get it reactivated presumably.

Yes, you will need the other line reconnecting.

Hmmm, what line is he using?
Blackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool

  • He has a separate line I think. There's no dial tone he said he would phone virgin to get it reconnected if I want so that can be easily sorted.

If it's a VM cable line then you can only have VM cable broadband. For any ADSL service you need a BT line. Unless he is referring to Virgin National, which is an ADSL service.
