You peak commit charge is 3 times installed ram, that is when it will grind to a halt, you need to uninstall the startup bloat, adaware, spybot, ask toolbar and fix those trusted zones in ie, install cleanmem and it will run like new again

Try IE, tools, internet options, advanced, reset to defaults

The best way of cleaning up a slow or badly infected machine is to backup all your data to an external drive, and do a factory restore using the factory restore partition (see manual or manufacturers website) or Windows disc. The alternative is to do it manually as follows (the list may look daunting, but should take less than an hour of effort (apart from virus scans)) :-

If you are posting because the machine is slow and haven't done so already, post your physical ram total, commit charge total, commit charge peak by doing CTRL ALT DEL, Task manager, performance - after virus infections this is the principle reason a machine goes slow so this information is important to help you

This is a general guide on cleaning up infections and speeding up pc's https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849

If you haven't all ready done it, Install Malwarebytes and do a FULL (not quick) scan (after updating it), fix anything found before closing, otherwise you'll have to do it all over again. If anything was found reboot the machine before continuing. http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

If you know you have just been infected, with a fake antivirus for example, running system restore to a previous restore point is often the fastest way of getting your machine working again

Making any changes to a PC setup always comes with a slight risk of something going wrong, the worse case scenario is an unbootable PC - ideally you should have got a backup of important data on dvd or external disk, and a disk image backup (http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp) or windows disc/factory restore partition available before you start. In the unlikely event that anything does go wrong, post on another pc for advice.

If you suspect an infection, here are some other virus scanners to try, let them fix anything found

Scanning with all the scanners above along with your resident scanner should remove most or all infections if there are any present on your machine, below is some specific (optional) advice based on your log which may help to improve speed and tidy things up.

Install and run ccleaner (untick the google toolbar during the install). Untick the "windows log files" box, under the system heading before cleaning. Also Tick the java cache tick box under CCleaner, applications, internet to wipe the java cache which sometimes hides infections. http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim

Install and run startuplite, accept suggested changes - http://www.malwarebytes.org/StartUpLite.exe

Disable ctfmon - control panel, regional and language options, languages, details, advanced, tick the Turn off advanced text services, ok

In the firefox address bar, type about:config then right click, new boolean, create a key called config.trim_on_minimize set to true

Using Hijackthis, tick and fix these entries

If you want a speedy machine, Use windows firewall and replace your antivirus and security software with avast 6 free - (a fast and lightweight virus scanner with good detection rates) http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download :

This is a list of (or remnants of) security software evident in your log, you may wish to uninstall these in Control Panel (add/remove programs or programs/features) to keep your PC running smoothly, too much overlapping or bloated security or useless tuning software can have a drastic effect on performance - always leave one resident scanner running (eg avast/avira etc)

When you've done all that, post a fresh hijackthis log and any logs of infections
    !!
    > . !!!! ----> .
  • Thanks, I've downloaded Malwarebytes but aborted as I'm going to bed now! (1 hour ahead here!)
I'll do as you suggest with those two to start - though I am on the edge of my feathers having already mentally bought a shiny new PC, I guess it's important to do this so that the person who moves my old stuff over wont also move any infections. And it's very educational too - me being someone for whom downloading is pretty up there there in the list of advanced activities!

Disappointed to be so infected though as I have so much stuff -or so I thought!

And I have to say I found 250 euro for a screen pretty expensive! Out of my depth in more ways than one tonight!

    Thanks all!

    Have you ordered it yet?

Having too much security software is part of the slowness problem, uninstall adaware and spybot, and it will be faster

The reason your existing pc is slow, assuming no infections, is you are using up all your ram with too many startup programs, once you follow the advice it shouldn't be slow anymore, and if it is, a stick of ram to solve the problem completely is much cheaper than a new pc.

    http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=Dimension%202400%20Series&Cat=RAM

firefox can also be a memory hog

Once you get your commit charge below 500MB, it should be fast

you could leave the malwarebytes scan running overnight to save time, but make sure you fix anything found before closing, otherwise you'll have to do it again

If you are going ahead with the new pc, you can transfer files yourself by using a usb caddy, which will then allow you to use the old disk for backup
    !!
    > . !!!! ----> .
  • Thanks Closed.
I haven't ordered anything yet just had a nice browse today!

I was planning to keep this one as backup anyway as my photo's are all over the place and are very precious to me. And before he became ill my husband, who was our house techie :) used to physically destroy our old hard disks himself because if passwords bank stuff etc people could recover.

I'll start again tomorrow as it always seems faster anyway in the morning (or maybe I am slower!).
I wonder if the tech person who the shop would send to set the new one up would get rid of this malaware because otherwise anything transferred would just infect the new PC.

Actually when it works its in fact fine it's just that if I have too many windows open or use both parts of the disk it gets stuck for 5 minutes typically sometimes less - though it always does get there in the end.

I actually only installed spybot the other day after something I read on one of the threads here! To a beginner like me it seems that everyone uses their favourite security programs? I mentioned Norton on another board - in totally another context - and everyone screamed to get rid of it - but I find it very reassuring.

Thanks for all your time. I never thought I would contemplate opening up the PC!:eek:

Precious photo's should always be backed up, a hard disk can fail at any time.

A dvd (assuming you have a dvd writer installed) holds thousands and costs around 10p. A shop will be charging you somewhere along the line for their time so you may as well clean it up yourself, it's an hours work

The reason it appears to get slower when you run too many things is because the commit charge > installed ram.

    uninstall adaware
    uninstall spybot
    install cleanmem
    set ie to defaults
    install and run startuplite
fix the O4 things above with msconfig

    reboot and start scanning

How much RAM do you have installed? A 9 year old system running XP is unlikely to have more than 512MB if you've never upgraded it. Once you've got the system clean, get on to the Crucial website and get some more-preferably 2GB. At the very least XP needs 1GB to run smoothly, which will only cost you £32, and takes 10 minutes to fit. Then you can cancel your new PC.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • What an educational day it's been!
    I have:

    • Uninstalled Spybot
    • Installed and run cleanmem
    • installed and run startuplite
    • run Malwarebytes again with no infections I think
    • Now, I haven't touched Norton nor Adaware because I dare not :(
    • I ran Hijackthis again though I'm not sure if the results look better? Here is the log:

I also did a crucial scan with the following result:

    Memory:DDR PC2700, DDR PC3200icon_detail.gifMemory Type: DDR PC2700, DDR PC3200, DDR (non-ECC)
    Maximum Memory: 2GB
    Currently Installed Memory: 512MB
    Total Memory Slots: 2
    Available Memory Slots: 1

    512MB
    DDR PC2700

    EMPTY

Each memory slot can hold DDR PC2700, DDR PC3200 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*
*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.

Now, it seems faster already - but maybe I just feel like a real technical person today :j

what's the commit charge and peak commit now after a reboot?

I'd uninstall adaware, and follow the rest of the instructions in post 14 to reduce startup bloat.

ie reset IE to defaults to see if it fixes the zone problem, fix ctfmon, follow the section on msconfig re O4's, fix mdm etc

you can leave norton on for now instead of avast (but avast is lighter on resources)

  • Oops, forgot to say,
    Commit charge is today:
    Total 688524
    Limit 1277112
    Peak 860572

    Also,
    uninstall adaware
    uninstall spybot
    install cleanmem

set ie to defaults and will be too frightened I think. I don't use ie.
    install and run startuplite
fix the O4 things above with msconfig - I'm not sure how to do this.
