I plan to escape TalkTalk bondage.
Its fine for some people but for me its just too slow, sometimes its just like dialup.
I've been told that if they do not provide the service they promised, I can get out of the contract, which is 18mo.
Has anyone managed to do this without paying lots of money to them?
Thanks

            Lucky Lucky you.
Let me tell you my Talk Talk story, and even as a Money Saver, I am begining to think you can't get something for nothing.
In May 2006 I signed up for Talk Talk landline and broadband, having been with BT and Pipex for these services. In August, I got online, but no landline. I contacted their nonexistent and incomprehensible customer services to resolve the matter. They were not able to. Since then, numerous phone calls and emails later, I still did not have my landline.
In November, I moved house, only 100 yards from my old home. I asked Talk Talk to transfer my landline/broadband. Neither happened within the agreed timescales, and now they do not seem to have a record of either me, or my details, or my request to move.
I have since then requested to go back to BT for landline and broadband. I know they are more expensive, and against the Money Saving ethic, but I really do think that these 'free' or cheaper broadband/landline suppliers don't have either the infrastructure, experience or knowledge to support their customers. I would rather pay good money for a service I can get, that is reliable with good customer service, than a service that does not deliver, with very poor customer service.

            Wow..
Have you thought of taking TT to small claims court? Or threatening them?0

I have, but I will hold off on that unless they give me any hassle over my cancellation request. At the moment they haven't attempted to take any money from me at all since May, as no landline was provided, but if they try to take a full 18 months worth, then it will definately have to go further."Whose the more foolish, the fool, or the fool who follows him?" - Obi Wan Kenobi

If they are providing you a service I doubt you can argue they've failed to meet their contractual agreement.
The people who got out of their 18 month contract are those that got the phone line but months later still never got the broadband.
Speed is an exclusion from the contractual agreement as it is not guaranteed and is always said to be "up to" and not a set speed. Depends on many factors so can't be guaranteed. Don't think speed will be a good enough reason for them to let you out of the 18 month contract.
You might want to consider do some speed tests if it is like a 56k dial up speed as it might be an issue in configeration rather than the broadband as surely the dial up speed is never reached even in the worst case scenarios. If you are downloading torrents, are you sure it isn't just few seeds rather than TalkTalk.0

Its more to do with their appalling customer service and total lack of understanding. Like another money saver said elsewhere, the head doesn't know that the body is doing and vice versa. The thing is though, they didnt provide the agreed service. There was no landline, but there was broadband. The opposite of your example. I am still waiting to hear back from them. I think there's a £70 fine to get out of the contract and they may take this before giving you the MAC code to escape.
I really want to get away from them just because they're so slow that it makes using the net difficult. Wish I'd stayed with Pipex, now that was fast internet!
I'm interested to hear from people who did get out of their contract..0

            Amazing
I called TT today, told them of my woes, they said it was fine to leave and that they would NOT charge me £70.. can this be true?
They wouldn't give me this in writing, but the woman gave me her name and section.
I've yet to see if this really happens, I'm planning to go to Tiscalli, which is only £19 for landline, free calls and broadband, I assume this will be a reasonably good quality company, as they are a dedicated broadband supplier.
 We'll see0

Tiscali have a worse reputation than TalkTalk so if you are looking for a better quality supplier it is allegedly not a good move:

With Tiscali i had a nightmare experience as they service doesn't exist at all.I have observed that cheapest thing is not always the best. They lie ,put you on the hold for long times & then charge 60GBP for moving the telephone line.I think bethere.co.uk may be good for those who look ultra service .AOL is ok but not still best as cs is awful but still better and bb is faster than plus.net & tiscali.Plus.net speed and cs is ok but download cap is a problem.0

Having just had the same awful experience with TT this week I can sympathise with you all. Ordered International 3 in August with free Broadband. Promised by September. Told phone line rejected on their first attempt but only by going into our local Car Phone shop did they eventually get the line up and running. No phone line until 26th October. Went on holiday for 2 weeks, no phone while we were away - problem with exchange. Fixed after 2 days of our return. Phoned Broadband department to enquire about the Broadband that hadn't happened and I spoke to some idiot who was taking about someone elses account. Eventually got through to someone English and they said that he would put in a formal complaint for me and it would be sorted in 21 days. By this time the original MAC code had expired. Went back into Carphone shop again on 13th November. Very helpful and they phoned to see what had happened. Apologised to me on behalf of TT and said to get another MAC code to be ready for the switch in 21 days code . Absolutely no correspondence from TT despite following up my case by email last Sunday and complaining about their dreadful service. I phoned TT and spoke to a nice man in the sales department, another nice man in customer services dept but they both insisted that the Broadband department was the place to go to.Spoke to another idiot on the phone yesterday and he told me to cancel the Wanadoo B/B I have at the moment and then the order should go through even quicker. I was on the phone for nearly 1 and a half hours! I was told that a month ago and can you imagine what would have happened? I would have had no chance to let off steam on this thread.Went back into Carphone shop today 15/December and they said that the order for Broadband should have been have been triggered on the last phone two phone calls and the man insisted that the B/B office put the order through manually and that I should follow up his request in the shop in 6 days time to see what had happened if anything. Can anyone tell me the name of the Boss man so that I can send him a copy of this thread to show him that they still haven't got their act together and he has got one of the worst PR departments I have ever had the misfortune to come across. I wouldn't bother but for the fact that I am trying to save about £10 a month and being on a pension now it would obviously help. Nice to have someone to share my frustration with. Will keep you posted. PS I tried to cancell the modem that I ordered in August as I realised that the one I have is okay. They can't do that. I have to return it when or I should say if it ever arrives!!!0
