All the "you can just move" still applies to owning a house (although, granted it takes longer and can be more expensive).

If you're renting, your rent money goes on the same things of maintaining a house, it's just someone elses house plus a little profit for them.

I have nightmares about waking up and finding a powerstation or landfill next door.

Happened to 4 different sets of friends I know.

There's a powerstation being built in our garden, but luckily it's a coal one. Which is fine, as it's the nuclear ones you've got to look out for as Mr Blank has accurately pointed out in point number 3 of his 12 point breakdown.

Thinking of taking a place but had some bad experience with landlords thinking they can come into my house.

My question is can I legally take a place and then change the locks without asking/telling the landlord? I could then maybe change the locks back when my tenancy is over?

    1. You have to consider changing your own locks because people come in when you're not expecting them to.

Just on this point Blank, who on earth are you renting your properties from? When we rented a house out I wouldn't have dreamed of entering the house unannounced. Thinking about it, we didn't even go in our house during the four years it was rented out.

    T-shirts are rubbish.

You are allowed your opinion, but for me they offer a significant, low-risk alternative to a traditional pension vehicle.

Good thread. Loads of positives for renting, which is good in these times of overpriced properties and an increasing array of 'helpful schemes' to encourage debt onto people. I think people feel pressured to buy - almost expected, which is wrong.

Renting>buying. And use the money you would buy with to invest and make more money.
I am not a financial expert, and the post above is merely my opinion.:j

I don't want to rent because the pokey 1-bed flats I can't quite afford are in the same area/building as drug-taking, rap-playing, party idiots.... and there's no off road parking or garden.

Renting might be OK on two good salaries, where you get an actual house. Bottom end of the market's poo.

My mortgage is half the cheapest local rent, and a third of a similar house. But I don't want to "make more money", just have a nice family home where we can do as we please. If you are ideologically opposed to buying that's fine. Just makes houses cheaper for the majority who do want to own their home.
    Been away for a while.

Very true. I suppose if you're passionate about these types of things though then it all matters to you. There's probably a clothing discussion forum somewhere on the interwebs where some nutter is making a list of 12 reasons why t-shirts are rubbish, with a handful of t-shirt fans arguing against their reasonings.

T-shirts are way overvalued at the moment - I wouldnt recommend buying into this fools trap . Personally, I'm renting a nice Lacoste dark green number at the moment until the economy improves. Wait and save for a few months and then see what the market is doing. Theres a fair few distressed sellers out there, might be some high-end stuff going for peanuts anytime soon (saw a stunning cotton Hugo Boss polo neck in turquoise the other day, been on the market for months)

3, If they build a nuclear power station next door you can just move
4, if they build a land fill site next door you can just move
5, if the area turns into a ghetto with high crime you can just move
9, If you neighbours are awful you can just move

Aren't these four reasons essentially just the same one?
