well theoretically sorn is like a tax with no cost but to be honest in this situation i would buy the disc locally or online or as ive done before if its an awkward one is pay at the local dvla office and let them post out in time

I have no need to use the car until the disk arrives, but I was just curious :D
I may tax my TR7 if the weather ever improves but I'll do that in the Post Office I think.
    Thanks :)

Wait till Tuesday and tax it at the post office, its not june until wednesday.
As an aside to the op's question, if we want to have local post office's in 5 or 10 years then we all should start using them more and not rely on the online options.

Isnt there a charge called 'failure to display'

There might well be but, as has been posted, if you apply & pay online before the current disc expires you can drive for up to 5 days without any problem.

Yes there is, but it only applies if it is not within the parameters as set out by the DVLA.

What if you tax a car that has been previously sorn'd? Can you legally drive from the 1st of the month if the disk hasn't arrived?

Then you cannot drive it until you receive the tax disc.

But if there is no need for the post office, why keep it open?
