I am happy with the 3.6.17 version, am I alright to continue with this? as I feel that, being a bit of a technophobe, I will end up getting all messed up, or will 3.6.17, end up being "discontinued"?
^^^^
^it's not a problem continuing with 3.6.17. i am too on one of my machines ( as a test bed )/ security updates will still be permitted as and when / FF might phase out 3.6.17 -- by which time version 4 will itself be superseded / lol /BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? Export as an HTML File from firefox
Import it into Firefox
Though any updates to new versions of firefox have always carried the bookmarks with them and kept them if an older version is re-installed0 -
I have downloaded this and had a look at the "getting to know Firefox 4", it won't allow me to do the first task I wanted, which was to import my bookmarks, only giving one choice to import from IE, how would I import my Firefox bookmarks?
You've snipped out the part of my post that broadly said how:
and the standard Organise bookmarks menu for bookmark export.
In Firefox 3.6, go into the Organise bookmarks menu (shortcut: CTRL SHIFT:

Then click on the Import and Backup part, and choose Export or Backup bookmarks and save them as JSON file to the desktop.
Quit Firefox 3.6, then load Firefox 4 - and use the same shortcut to load the 'Show All Bookmarks' menu (CTRL SHIFTthen select 'Restore' and select the bookmarks you did before.
(if you installed Firefox 4 over the top of Firefox 3.6, you'd be able to skip this step as the profile would remain across versions. With the portable version, you can just copy the firefox profile folder over to it as well. Still, it's worth making a new profile as profiles seem to carry a bit of bloat with them; with some experimenting I've found it makes a huge speed difference to some computers to make a new profile)0 -

This has worked, but I think I will for the time being stay with the version I am comfortable with, but may play about with the portable one. Thanks.

Couple of quick Qs re F4.
I don't appear to have the option to "save and quit" when closing down as I do in 3.6.17. which means I lose the tabs I prefer to save so they all open up again on start up.
Can I get the progress bar back on the bottom task bar same as 3.6.17?

Firefox 4 won't let you decide how many days you want to keep your "history" for.
no idea what it is going to do/for how long it keeps it, but the option to decide for yourself in Firefox 3 has been removed.........
Recall seeing there is an add on somewhere for getting the progress bar back0 -

Well you can... remember history, don't remember history or custom history in a drop down box.
Under remember history - that's it - no further options
Under custom history you get options to remember (or not) parts of the history such as cookies, downloads, browsing,search.....but nothing abut how LONG to keep the history....and there is an option to clear history upon exiting from Firefox.0 -
What options have you got if you click tools, options, privacy?
3.6.17
Remember browsing history for, set @ 90 days.
remember download history.
remember search and form history
Accept cookies from sites
accept third party cookies.
F 4
Remember history
never remember history
use custom settings for history
When clicking "use custom settings for history" it gives same as 3.6.17, but without the "Remember browsing history for".
Answer for my Q above, Can I get the progress bar back on the bottom task bar same as 3.6.17?
Also there does not appear to be a "refresh buton" in F 4!

To get the Save tabs warning, in the address bar type: about:config, and say I'll be careful! with the jokey warning.
look for the line in the filter: browser.showQuitWarning; false
and set it to TRUE by double clicking on it.
Dione that, now set as TRUE, makes no difference, i.e. still no "save and quit" box.
Looks like they have removed the facilty under "Remember browsing history" to input amount of days.
A step backwards?
