Post Office broadband dropping connection

For the past number of weeks my broadband connection has been disconnecting with annoying frequency. I've replaced filters and ethernet cables as instructed by their helpline people, the latest reason they have come up with is it is because I do not leave the modem on permanently ( I admitted to the helpline bod that the computer and modem are switched off at night). Is this indeed the case, should a modem be left on permanently?

I leave mine on all the time with no drama's.The power consumption is minimal anyway. Are you using an extension to connect the router to the main phoneline? If so,that could be the cause.

Its a Network Ethernet Cable direct from the socket to the modem, do you know if switching the modem off nightly could cause problems or am I just being fobbed off?

It can cause connection problems with broadband.Do you have all the phone points that are being used connected thru filters & is the filter connected into the master socket first? (if you have Sky or plug in extensions)

I only have one phone socket and it has a micro filter, I have been trying to reply for ages but the internet connection keeps dropping

What you need to do is remove the faceplate bottom half from the master socket, then connect the filter ect into the test port at the back right. If it's still doing the same, then the fault is either with the Router itself or the phoneline back to the exchange.

When you say 'modem', so you mean router'? If you are using an old USB modem, then it is effectively obsolete and you need to upgrade.
Switching the router off requires it to resynch with the exchange every time, leaving it on 24/7 is quite OK as the power drain is no more than a few watts.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

The telephone socket does not have a bottom half, it's all one piece. The modem is a ZyXEL with a DSL socket, an ethernet socket and a power supply.

Does it say "ADSL" or "ADSL+" on it? Is it wireless enabled (router) or just a plain modem?

Might be quite old then & not fully compatable. Most modern ones are Routers with built in wireless.Cant say I've ever heard of the brand you have but a quick google suggests they might be quite old.
    What model is it?
