oh? so my cousin can still open an account with them no problems at all?

no need to slap £1k in there?

I think to qualify for cashback on debit card purchases, £1000 must be paid into account for that particular month.

James, I suspect that the OP is only concerned with opening the account, rather than any debit card promotions

Yes, I believe it is all English and Welsh branches, certainly all in Manchester. Once opened you can ask to transfer to a Scottish branch at the time of sale to Santander, or if you open online you can choose a Scottish branch to open the account at.

If it's an account for your cousin and they are old enough to operate an account, why do you have to go with them to a branch 5 mins from where you are?

They are opening the account, not you. What do they prefer? (Answering own question: Having hand held by someone while they grow up.)

    What's it to you anyway?

There are dozens of branches in each city.

Any account opened in England or Wales with a 16---- sort code (except 160038) will become part of Santander in the future.

In theory though an account can be opened under any sort code at any branch. If you want it at a Scottish branch just say you are due to be moving and there should be no issue.
