BT Basic and the cheapest broadband solution

Options
A friend of mine gets very cheap BT basic line rental, which he was moved onto from the old light user scheme. He wants broadband and has an information pack that says BT Basic allows broadband, but there is no option for it on the website and then he phoned up they said BT basic users cannot have broadband!

I suggested he moves phone rental to Primus (£6.50-a-month) and moves to Plusnet (£6.49-a-month). However, in his area Plusnet want £12.50-odd a month after the first three £6.49 months.

Is his best options just to take BT Broadband with evening and weekend calls (£13-a-month) and normal line rental (£10-a-month when prepaying)? They give 4 months free broadband and £50-ish Topcashback, so doesn't seem bad.

He doesn't want TalkTalk due to their poor reputation. Any other options worth looking at?

BT are wrong as usual. You can have any of the BT broadband tariffs with BT Basic. What you can't do is bundle it-the broadband will be at the standalone extra charge.
From the BT Basic web page:

Can I have broadband with BT Basic?

Yes. We recognise the importance of the internet in today's world and BT Basic has been designed to allow broadband on the line. If you do take a broadband service the cost of this will be added to the BT Basic line rental.

Thanks. I did a web chat on the BT website and they said it was possible, but the chat was slow and he didn't seem very sure, suggesting my friend phones up (again).

So do you think the £13 broadband package would work with BT basic or would it cost more than that? It's all rather confusing.

As I said, any BT Broadband package will work with BT Basic. You cannot take it with a calls bundle, as that would preclude being on BT Basic.

Plusnet Value is £6.49pm if you are on a Market 3 exchange, not £7.99, a good budget option. However this is a 10GB capped tariff.

He isn't on a market 3 exchange, as Plusnet want £12.99-a-month after the first three months, so I think he is probably best taking BT broadband, unless anyone has other suggestions?

I have BT Basic but my broadband cost is £21.50 per month for 40GB allowance. I'd try and get broadband with someone else if you can. I have negotiated a further discount on my total bill but that took some doing.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
